An ' affidavit has been sworn and sub scribed to before' Justice T.' M.? Gardner, by a colored woman by the name of Jane Foy," to the effect that one Andrew Ellis, also colored, did on the night of the 10th of July set fire to her dwelUng, situated on Ninth, in the neighborhood of Rankin July set fire to her dwelling, situated on street. The circumstances of the case, as - we understand them, are as follows: It seems that Ellis and his wife did not agree very well together; in - fact,' he is 'charged with having frequently used violence to wards her, and his conduct finally became so outrageous that his wife's daughter by another marriage, the said' Jane Foy, a short time since rented another house and .y . ! .' - ; ,; prevailed upon her mother to go and live with - her. On tho night in ques tion -Ellis went to. the house where Jiis wife and -: her daughter" - were - residing, an. intoxicated; condition, : and !, upon being urged to leave declared that he would remain on the premises as long as he pleased. He continued to hang about the lot, being denied admission into the house; until late hour at night, when the two women suddenly discovered that the house Was on fire.' They rushed out and alarmed the neighbors, by whose assistance the flames Were extinguished. It was found that alot of ligbtwood and .'other combustible ma terial had been placed under one corner of the house and the flames when discovered had burned .a hole of considerable size in one ' plank' of ; the weather-boarding, had gained good headway on the sill and was rapidly communicating to other portions of the building. In the meantime Andrew EiUs escaped and was seen running rapidly in the direction " of . , the nearest woods. Upon the facts' becoming known competent officers were placed on his track, but up to late yesterday afternoon no ; clue had been obtained as to his whereabouts. . - '-r A, Horrible Outrage A Little Girl tne. Victim. - . , ; , We have had the particulars for some days past of an outrage committed in this city, but have refrained from giving them publicity if ram ; prudential motives. On Sunday night last a colored family by the name of Shepherd went to church, leaving a small colored gill by the 'name of Laura Hanktns, who was in their employ, to take care of the house durmg their absence. Thinking she would probably wish to retire before their return they made her a pallet on the floor near the front door in order that she could be easily awakened when they came back from church. . It seems from the Statement Of the little cirl.-Who day or two since, that not long after the family had, left, , William Shepherd, a son of,, the family, she .was liv ing with, came to .- the door and knocked, and upon being admitted he pro ceeded to commit an outrage upon her per son.
