Worth & Worth. Lime. - Burglary. $i On Snntlay tolght, sometime between midnight and day, the family- of - Mr. Geo. A. Peck, residing on Third,, between Ann and Nun streets, were aroused by loud jcries of " murder," "robbers," &c,, issuing from an occupied tenement on his premises. Upon investigation it was found that a bur glarious enterance had been effected into : the building through one of the windows. It seems that th:e were two rooms in the building, in one of "which the Wardrobe of ! the family is kept, while the other is used as a bed room.: The woman was awakened by . some auspicious noise iu the room first mentipned. , aod called her hus band v and told .him about it. By the! time ha became awake, however, the nois "awf enthrely! ceased,' and he imputed the circumstance to nervousness on the part of his wife and went to sleep again. But only a few minutes had elapsed when the woman heard the noise commence agaia,. where upon she" raised an alarm, when the thief suddenly and boldly dashed through the room occupied by the family and made his exit through one of the windows. A sub sequent examination showed that there was nothing missing from the room, the thief having been too much obstructed in his 'movements to carry out his plans. Entertainment at Lnmberton, An interesting and successful tableaux vivants, under the supervision, of Mxs.-W. A. Dick, took place at the Court House in Lumberton a few evenings since in the pres ence of a large and respectable audience of ladies anjl gentlemen. The entertainment, which was for the benefit of the Episcopal Church, was a very creditable one in every respect, the representation of " Night" and "Morning," by two of Robe son's fairest daughters, and also of " The Maid of Orleans" and the signing of Queen Mary's deaib warrant were charmingly ren- dered. Among the audience were noticed Judge Clarke and Solicitor CantwelJ. Preparing for Cold. Veatner. A stove belonging to the Mission School of the First Presbyterian Church, which had been placed in possession of Robert Martin, Sexton of the church, was stolen a few days since. A search warrant was is sued on Saturday and tbe missing property found in the possession of a colored man by the name of Joe Mitchell, residing at or near the corner of Eighth, and Orange Sts. He was thereupon. arrested and had a hear ing before Justice W. A. Green yesterday morning, who required him to pay a fine of $2 and costs. m An Kxeltlne Runaway. Yesterday, when the. circus procession was passing on Front, street, a horse attach ed to a dray, which was standing in the vicinity of Lippitt's block, became frighten ed and dashed up Front to Dock street, causing a "scatteration" among the "knights and ladies in gorgeous apparel" which was quite amusing. The frightened animal turned down Dock street in the direction of Water, in the neighborhood of which he was halted in his mad career. ' i j'i's . m m Tbe Drama. The specimen before us will certainly compare favorably with the best we have seen. There was a fair attendance in the afternoon and quite a crowd at the night performance. Con cerning the merit of the concern there seems to be but one opinion, viz: that it has no merit, or so little that it is complete ly lost in the general inferiority. We took especial pains to ascertain the general opin ion on this subject, and that opinion is almost unanimous in pronouncing Lent's circus a decided failure. Dlptherla. Tbe Raleigh News has an excel lent editorial on the subject of legislative aia ior ine orpuan Asylum. It quotes from the State Constitution. Article IX., section 8, as follows: "There shall also, as soon as practicable, . be measures devised by the State for the establishment of one or more Orphan Houses, where destitute orphans may be cared for, educated and taught some business , or trade." Now, says the News, the Grand Lodge of Masons has relieved the Legislature of the heavy expense of building "one or more Orphan Houses, which the Constitution demands. A magnificent structure, costing over thirty thousand dollars, with ample grounds, has been donated to the state for this identical purpose. AH that is now required or the Legislature is to make some provision for the care and education of the destitute or phans, who have been placed at the Asy lum without any charge or expense to the State. Milton Chronicle: Fears i are entertained that yoiinsr Dr. Ellington, who boarded at Mr. Norman's, near Ringgold, Va., has committed suicide. He left anote last Thursday telling Mr. Norman not to enquire alter mm, that he would never re turn, and we have heard it mentioned 1 that he stated in the note, he intended to take 25 grains oi morphine. Mr. .Norman didn't get the note till next day and immediately r a f. . lDsuiuieu searcn alter we young man, dui to no effect. His relatives were then tele graphed to at Reidsville, and his two broth, era have ever Bince been hunting him up and down the railroad. Last Monday his venerable father left home at Wentworth and came to Mr. Norman's, where, we learo, Dr. Ellington had left his will, making a systematic disposition of all his property. Be left all bis clothes and fine horse and saddle at Mr. Norman's, and his physician account book with some six hundred dol lars due on good parties, and' instructions to Mr. Norman to collect the same.
