The stone has to remain 12 hours each time and on the first application afforded her great relief, and she is now in good spirits and feeling no pain or inconvenience .whatever from the bite. The stone is about the size ot a hickory nut, and was formerly owned by 3lr. Humphry bale, ot Garonne county. After his death at a sale it was bought by a Mrs. Harrison, of Richmond city, whd "Xltill owns it, having paid $1,600 for it. Miss Graves was informed that this slone had been applied to over 300 persons, proving entirely successf nl in every case, no person ever ex peri- encing any trouble afterwards from the bite. - Keisn of Reckless Extravagance and Corruption. Witthaus, Waite, and Bishop, it appears that the Cap- taiu's behavior was not generally imitated ' by his subordinates. The story told by the people on the Loch Earn has a disagreeable look. The first boat which reached her from the Ville du Havre contained five men only of the officers and crew of the French vessel, who. had secured their own safety, without the slightest re- gard for the passengers. The ofiicer who seems to have been primarily re J i sponsible for the collision can never be beard in his own justification, but as the evidence stands at present it seems difficult to resist the conclusion that a lack of presence- of mind on the Ville. du Havre brought the vessels together, and a lack of dis- cipline .terribly aggravated the result- mg loss oi me, , It is stated that Mr. M. The colored men who were injured by the explosion of the steam saw mill at Ar gyle a few days since are improving and very little doubt is now entertained of their recovery. A colored man by the name of Scott, who was drunk and acting in a very dis orderly manner on the streets and in houses which he visited, was arrested yesterday and lodged in the Guard House. Arrest of Supposed Burglars Their Escape and Recapture. Yesterday morning, about 8 o'clock, as Capt. Fitzgerald, of the police force, was making his way to the City Hall, he was ac costed by a gentleman at the corner of Fourth and Chesnut streets, who informed him that two suspicious characters had been on his premises. They pretended that they wanted food, but instead of goiDg to the front door and applying for assis tance they had entered through the gate into the back yard, where they were dis covered by the gentleman and ordered off. They were at that time proceeding up Fourth street in the direction of Mulberry and Capt. Fitzgerald followed them.' He came up with them at Mr. D. A. Smith's residence, in whose front piazza they were standing when the officer called to them to come to him. They did so, when he started to take them to the Guard House. On the .. way one of the par ty, who gave his name as Joseph Dickson, and said he was an Englishman, remarked that he didn't want to be locked up, and just as they reached the corner of Third and Chesnut streets .he broke and run up Chesnut in the direction of Fourth. As it happened Deputy Sheriff Morris was com ing down the street in the vicinity of Fourth and at a signal from Capt. Fitzgerald he seized the fugitive and took him back. In the meantime,' while the officer had his eye on Dickson, his companion, who answered to the name of John Gorden and says he is an Irishman, also fled, going down Third in the direction of Princess, up which street he turned. When he had reached the front f the jail the officer was near, enough to hail a colored man who was passing in close proximity to the prisoner at the time and at a word from the captain he was also secured. The two were there- upon lodged in the Guard House. Upon being searched a lot of tools, supposed to be such as are used by burglars, were found en the person of one of the prisoners. Reslsned. C, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 25; 18731 Christmas. Christmas, with all its tender associa tions, its pleasant memories, its holy inspir ations and its festive enjoyments is upon us. "We are now in the midst of that sea son when, for the nonce, all the cares and toils and useless repinings incident to every day life ate made subservient to the natural impulses of our hearts, which lead us to enjoy without stint what we may have, let it be much or little, of the pleasures and comforts which surround us, giving thanks to the Great Giver of all' good that he has spared us to see another Christmas day, while our thoughts revert to that glorious event, of which this day is the anniversary, when, in Bethlehem of Judea there was born unto us a Saviour and Redeemer of the world. Let our hearts, then, go forth in glad re joicings, to-day; and while we gather around the festive board and partake of the boun ties which God has permitted us to enjoy, let na not fnnret th m'anv in our midst who from misfortune, poverty and sickness, are denied the pleasures which so abun dantly surround us in our own happy homes and around our own cheerful firesides. Let them feel the blessed influences of this joyful season. Let their hearts be made glad for one day at least, and made to re joice in the thought-that, after all, this is not such a bad world and that there are a great many good people in it. To the children Christmas is a season big with importance. Christmas trees, loaded with presents of toys and trinkets and good things of every description have been erectol for their benefit, while the in evitable stockiuir, the recepticle for the favors that " Santa Claus " rarely fails to shower upon them, will ere these lines are read have been sought for with feverish eagerness, in its accustomed place in the chimney corner, and the contents display ed with pride and pleasure by the " little folks." Hoping that nothing may happen to pre vent a full fruition of our brightest hopes and anticipations on this, joyous occasion,. and that we may all feel the cheering in fluences that will permeate the social at mosphere on this anniversary of the great est event in the world's history, we close by tenderirg the compliments of the season to our friends far and near, wishing them a ' Merry Christmas and a happy New Year!"
