A colored boy by the name of Robert Richardson about. 10 .or 12 years of age and living at Mr W. J. Potter's place, at Ft. Peter, opposite this pity, met with a severe accident yesterday morning, and narrowly escaped instant death. It seems that he had placed a ball in a rifle which did not fit, being too large, and after trying for, some time to get it out, without success, he finally adopted the novel plan of melting it out To do thU the more eflectually he took the stock off and placed the butt of the rifle in the fire. After letting it remain awhile he took it outplaced the muzzle to his mouth and blew in the barrel to see what eflect, had ben produced by the ! melting process. Finding the ball " just -: as stubborn as ever he again placed : the . butt, of .the. rifle in the fire, at the same time patting his right hand over the muzzle, as if to catch the ball as it came out ! Whether this was, his intention or not, the result justified the guppofiition, as immediately, afterwards the plewaa bUschargeA aidl the ball passed entirely tlirougltthe hand of' the boy, terri bly lascerating it and so mutilating the middle finger that it had to be amputated He was immediately taken to! this City Hos pital, where tbe ecesaarr;.operatien wa performed and the wound properlj dressed by Dr. Winantv tlw physician to charge. der at the groas carelessness which pro duced the result, and which is the cause Qf so many persona! bewg aaiued,; or maimed Cotton Faetorleo.
