The citizens, authorities and people of : the city of Wilmington have learned that on Saturday last the Chief Magistrate of the State, while absent from the capital but in the actual discharge of his exalted office, Suddenly fell down into the cold embrace of death, and is buried in the soil he loved and among the people he served so , faithfully and so long,: and it is fitting they should express the public sor row in which this event has involved them and the State; therefore be it . - Beaolved, That we, the people, authorities and citizens of Wilmington, have received with profound sensibility the announcement of the sudden death of Gov. At a later hour he proceeded to the well again and. found the surface- of the water covered with a greasy looking sub stance. This circumstance led him to con sult two prominent physicians, ; under the impression that poison might have been put in the well during the night previous. Some of the water was taken and analyzed, when it was found to be strongly impregnated with strychnine and arsenic. Mr. Smith was thereupon cautioned not to use the water either for drinking, cooking or wash ing purposes. We learn that the well of Mr. J. F.
