Yesterday morning, between the hours of 3 and 4 o'clock, the usaal quietude of that TJOrtion of .thfi Htv - lv5nr and fkAinw" in- 4Ko ,r 1 xt- " -i he neighborhood of Ninth and Chesnut wbrecus was uroiten mio uy luc sunn noiesoi alarm and distress evidently proceeding from a female voice, among which could fee distinguished the-, startling cries of Fir6! MvrderP "Police!" "Help!" etc. ;The entire neighborhood Was quickly roused, for nothing can more rapidly and Effectually awaken the dormant energies and startle into activity the drowsy facul ties than the cries of a female in distress, es pecially when -beardat that "weird and solemn period which immediately precedes (lie first streaks of approaching dawn, when all nature seems to be pervaded by a death ly stupor.-, joined with, these cries, or immediately a succeeding tnem, iwas heard the quivering notes of a policeman's whistle, summoning reinforcements. Sev eral of the neighbors were quickly at the scene of the outcries, which was found to be at the residence of Mr; Geo. C. McDou- gald, corner of Ninth and Chesnut streets. It Seems that some thief had effected an en trance into the house through a pantry win dow and when discovered was in a room It- occupied by-one of the ladies of the family, Actually having his hand upon her person when she awoke. Of course she was terri bly frightened, but stilj had the presence of mind. to clutch, the brute, but he slipped from her grasp. It was then that she star ed the alarm, which was followed by the apid and unceremonious exit of the thief from the premises. It appears that the same fellow, from the ( fa , , proken into the kitchen on the premises of. Jr. Max Engel, immediately opposite Mr. McDougald's, a short time previously, but lad been "detected and driven off. This act had come to the knowledge of Police- taan E. F. Martin, vho had walked up in that direction, passing the residence of Mr. $1. and being nearly to the corner of the iiest block, at Ninth street and McCumber's alley, when he heard the alarm. He has tened to the spot and thoroughly ransacked ihe premises, while persons were stationed around the lot to prevent the egress of the thief, but the " bird had flown. The lady I in whose room the thief was discovered had a good view of him and describes him as a low, squatty colored man, being barefooted, jand saj-s she would be certain to know him if she should see him sfgain. There were evidences to show that. Ihe Jwould-be thief had thoroughly overhauled the premises, doubtless in search of money or valuables, but we learn that nothing so far has beeu missed. Since writing the above we learn that the mother of Mr. McDougald, aged between 60 and 70 years, was chloroformed by the thief, from the effects of which, together with the. shock and fright Incident to the nrnnrrenM tshfi hpramp. rlplirinne sman nfiAr I , , - I and at last accounts, late yesterday evening, I was still in a very critical condition.
