A report reached, this city this afr. ternoon that about four handred ne groes, under the leadership of a nejarff nji6ed Tenant, intended to make an attack on the whites near Reese's store, in Edgefield, S. C, about fifteen miles from Augusta. It is reported" that some unknown parties tared into the house of Tenant last night,1 and that he intended to retaliate upon the whites, who assembled to resist the assault. A courier arrived here with a note from a prominent white citi zen of Edgefield asking for assistance. A party organized and were on the eve of starting from here when anoth er courier arrived bringing the in formation that Tenant had been ar rested by the civil authorities, that the' negroes-had dispersed, and all was quiets Tenant was a member of the Convention which nominated Chamberlain. v ; ; ' v ; There is an uneasy feeling that there will be trouble in Carolina be tween the whites and blacks. Narrow Escape. Yesterday morning a large limb was cut from a tree in front of the Purcell House. In falling the large end struck the ground near the curb stone in such a way as to cause the other end to fly back upon the sidewalk,' just grazing the shoulder of CoL E. D, Hall, who was standing on the pave ment watching the operation of cutting the limb, and who dodged barely in time to avoid the blow. As the limb was a heavy one and thrown back with great violence Col. H. may be congratulated upon making a fortunate as well as very narrow escape.
