A few tUys since we ' mentioned the.fact
Ihtjt the new building at the CchintyPpoc,
-" ,jl Ioufjyjtijd ijfor'Una'sarTetients,1
u ffrtearlyompleted. ". It is now finished
- and yesterday this class of the parishioners
: were to have been transferred from their
old quarters to .the new : building prepared
, for their benefit It appears that a colored
man, well known about town as."Tinney"
Mcllhenny, and a colored youth about 21
or 22 years of age, by the name of Nathan
Graham, got an inkling of the proposed
transfer., Graham is very violent at times,
nnd has to be kept closely confined in a cell
as a means of protection to the other in-
. mates of the institution, while old 'Tin
ney," on the contrary, though considerably
crackbrained, is nevertheless perfectly
harmless, though easily persuaded; hence
Le wes - allowed the freedom of the
main room in the building,' without being
; placed under the restriction of lock and
key, Graham some how got the notion in
his bead that he would not like bis new
quarters, .and prevailed upon "Tinney" to
' get a hatchet from the, yard and liberate
him and that the two would then make
their escape. Accordingly, about 12
o'clock on Thursday night "Tinney" got
the hatchet and finally succeeded in ' sever
ing a link of the chain which was used in
fastening the door of the cell in which Gra
ham was confined, when the door was easily
opened. The. two then took their depar
ture, Graham with a pair of handcuffs on
his wrists which; the Superintendent had
found it t' expedient -to ' call; into re
quisition. He had sense s enough, how-'
ever, to take a blanket along which he
wrapped around him in such a manner as
to hide the ornaments. They started down
.the track of the W. &' Railroad, but
to and succeeded in accommodating" them
selves to a lot of eggs which they took from
a nest iu a chicken coop, with which they
satisfied the cravings of their appetites,
which'had been whetted by their night's
adventure. They then proceeded until they
reached Union Depot, when they were sud
denly brought to a halt by Mr. Whitey
Bowden, the watchman. Upon being stop
ped Graham showed a disposition to resist
and made an attempt, although handcuffed,
to get hold of the hatchet which1 " Tinney'
still carried in his hand, the latter in the
meantime, with an idiotic grin, standing
. calmrily and passively in the spot where he
had been halted. In trying , to get 4 the
hatchet the blanket fell from the shoulders
of Graham, disclosing the handcuffs and
revealing to Mr. Bowden something of the
- true character of the men before him. . He
thereupon took the hatchet from "Tinney"
and told Graham if he resisted he would use
it on him. This had the effect of. cooling
the ardor of the- crazy youth and Mr. B.
marched them both to the Guard House,
where they were locked up. .
Dr. Scott, Superintendent of the Work
House, in the meantime was perfectly ob
livious of the escape, of the lunatics, only
discovering the fact about 5 o'clock yester-
day morning, 1 when he immediately dis.
patched a couple of men to hunt them up.
Fortunately, one of the first places they vis
ited was, the Guard House, " where they
found the two patients and took them back
to their old quarters, when they were placed
in their cells in the new structure provided
- for the insane inmates of the institution.
' Dlsttneaished Arrival
A buzzard not a vulture, nor a carrion-
- crow, -nor yet a condor but a regular,
. fire tried,'' old-field buzzard, with as keen
a scent for anything lying about loose as
Beast Butler himself, arrived here yesterday
.... morning, via " Air Line" from Charleston,
8. C. - He worried along under the rule of
, j Moses L as long as an honest buzzard could.
. honine better thinzs. and knowing that
y into each life some rain must ' fall," bat,
finding that the Columbia Convention bad:
put up Chamberlain, hg realized, with that
. intuitive perception characteristic of his
tribe, that the " Jig was up," that there .
would soon remain no carrion for him.
The most meek spirited buzzard cannot be
expected to stomach everything. .The dis
mal prospect fairly " puked" him. But he
rallied; he rose above his surroundings; he
sailed, on easy wing, like another Columbus
in search of new worlds, and this place he
made the very butt and sea-mark of his ut-
mos sail. There was a sweet savor in our -air.
which reminded him of the Ashley's
banks, and of his young barbarians there at
.-play. -He is determmed to stay with us
- until his native State is regenerated, or until
; his summons -eomes to join the innumer-
- able caravan of buzzards which shall feast
forever on the " loudest" of mule meat-
three times a day with a juicy carpet
bagger for dessert.

The Great Falls FactoryMreat De

In our issue of Wednesday! we briefly al
luded to the damage done to the Great Falls
Factory, in Richmond county, by the re
cent storm. From an extra from the office
of the Pee Dee Courier, whosfc editor visited
the scene of the disaster, We i learn that the
basement room of the mills, containing
about sixty bales of sheeting, looms; ma
chinery, tools, &c., was partly filled with
with water,, and there was much water bn
the second floor'" caused Jy its dashing
down the falls and over tiJT. rocks. The
. . . . : v -w --.
building was entirely sufrojfnded by the
running water. The washing' away of the
dirt and rock dam above, neit to and north
of the building, precipitated jthe water di
rectly against the wheel-hose carrying it
away. The extent of the loss sustained by
this sad occurrence cannotj until further
developments,.be correctly ejptimated. The
actual loss, however, must be between seven
and ten thousand dollars. Besides this the
dams above sustained great injury. .
At the Pee Dee Mills,"on fhe Hitchcock,
considerable injury has beln done to ihe
brick, brick kilns, and a large quantity of j
