Ncwbern Times . Early on San
day morning the barn of Wm. G. Taylor,
Esq., about three miles' from Einston, was
. discovered to be on lire, and was, togetJier
with a valuable, horse, totally consumed.
The fire is supposed to be of incendiary
origin, but the perpetrator has not been dis
covered. - - '
Mrs. J. P. Wilson, of Hertford
county, died very suddenly Thursday night,
22nd, ult. ,as was then supposed, of lockjaw.
Dr. R. T. Weaver attended her,, and
pressed a suspicion, oaseu uu tuersympioms,
that strychnine had been administered to
ber. Sue was taken ill on the moraing.of
her death. Her husband, who had married
only a few weeks previously, was arrested
on suspicion of. having administered it.
On Fridayjast a coroner's inquest was held ,
wnuout, uowever. 'exhuming the body of
Sirs. Wilson, and returned a verdict that
the deceased . came to her death by
strychnine administered by some ptisoa
unknown. It appears that Mr. Wilson is
ubout 22 years f age. About five weeks
ago he married deceased, she being between
45 and 50 years of age. She had made a
will giving to her husband, in case of her
death, about $2,000 worth of property left
her by an aunt Raleigh New.

During the late term of thej Superior
Court in this city a colored ibdiyidual by
the name of Robert Hill, who was in jail
awaiting trial for larceny, addressed a note
to His Honor, Judge McKoy, in which he
informed him that he. was. a Democrat,
that he supported him (the jJudge) in the
late election and that he must remember
these things to his advantage. After Hill's
trial and conviction, and the. Judge was
about passing' sentence upon him, he re
ferred to the fact of bis having received the
note from the prisoner," giving its purport,
: and Concluded by saying, " Well, Robert,"
Democrat must vat steal, and I shall there
fore send you to the Penitentiary for five
years!" . -

ported ashore at Big Islajsd on Tuesday
night, but it was . thought probable she
would come off with the next tide.
A schooner, the name of which our in
formant did not ascertain, was ashore yes
terday at New Inlet, near the wreck of the
Ealeigk, sunk during the war. She was ex
pected to get off without damage. ' ' ,
Tbe Spanish Barque IMna, which was
capsized near the quarantine station during
the heavy gale in September, has 'been
raised, or nearly so, and is expected to come
up to tuc city by Sunday or Monday next.

The Wilmington Cornet Concert Club
played a number of beautiful airs last night
from the top of the New Hanover Bank
building, the lofty Serenade being In honor
of the great victory achieved by the Demo
crats and Conservatives of the country In
the recent elections. The music was de
lightful and drew together qujje a large
crowd in tha vicinity. .
By the way, we learn that preparations
have been made to fire one hundred guns
to-day in honor of tbe glorious triumph.

Convention, which met- in the First Bap
tist Church, in .this city, yesterday morn
ing, we observed the f ollowing-gentlemen

lege, in stature, like. Saul, towering above
his brethren; Rev. W. T. WalteraJ D. J.,
also a Wake Forest professor, and the ven
erable and excellent President of the Con
vention, Rev. Dr. Brooks. ; Besides these,
there are in attendance such ministers, of
acknowledged influence and talent, as Rev.
J. D. Hufham, a genial ex-editor ; the versa
tile Rev. A. F. Recld, editor of the B3)Hcal
Recorder; Rev. Messrs. Hiden, of Wilming
ton, Owen, of Tarboro, Ivey, Bailey Cobb,
and others. Professor Reiuhart, President
of Thomasville Female: College, is also a
delegate. Altogether the Convention, in
learning, piety and the spirit of work Is
equal to the average of - such religious bod
ies, and appears to be doing its work har
moniously, earnestly and with dignity., It

Pilots aire especially en joined to make careful en

subject to forfeiture of their branch; Masters of
