ELEGANT blVEUSIONS. j
We are an advocate of genuine opera and
high drama for their refiniBg influences.
Diversion is not always simple recreation;
it is often part of a polished culture. jWith
the Greeks and other ancients and the best
examples among moderns in the scope of
ouwfoiental vision while w;e write, viS hesi
tate not to make the assertion that no edu
cation must ber considered complete that
does not include a criticism of dramatic
and operatic art. Of course this criticism
may be elaborate aDd profound, or itj may j
be narrow and meagre. That depends on
opportunity and mental habit and training.
But as pleasant as the subject is, wehave
n6t the time this morning to be discursive.
Our present purpose is to direct attention
to the unusual advantages enjoyed by our
public at this season. It is seldom that we
have within four days the pleasure osuch
a presentation of historical drama as
Madame Janauschek will give us this even
ing in the superb role of England's lion
hearted Queen, followed by so supeVror a
rendition of a master of song by Miss Phil-
lipps. We remember only one recent season
when Janauschek, Jefierson and Owens
rilled our beautiful Opera House and rwere
tlie delight of all circles for weeks when
our facilities for elevating amusementjwere
t occe'so varied and so . great. That sea
son we uaa no opera, vv e presume luese
advantages will be improved tof the
full "by a larse number of f our
citizens' Purely in the interests of jbigh
nit, rerind- taste and healthy recreation we
bespeak a graceful recognition on the part
of our people, both to-night and Tuesday
evening, of the talents and genius of the
distinguished artistes who will honor, lis by
their appearance. 1 j

JanauscbeK. " , .
The Opera House, this evening,, will
doubtless be packed with oui 'play-goers to
witness the performance of the play enti
tled the " Earl of Essex," in Jwhich the in-
comparable Janauschek will personate the
character of (Wen "Elizahetli. In rearard
to his characterization thei .'Springfield
(Mass.) Republican says: " This piece has
situations in (which the great) powers of
Janauschek are manifest. Tortured all
through by th struggle of the'queen who
who must ponish, with the Woman who
loves, Essex.'ishe depicts masterfully the
subjugation her passion to hir duty, and
finally to a mightier passion revenge. But
me ciimax oi oramauc inieresi:ana oi ner
personation wans the revelatioq of Essex's
cruel treachery o her heart, lie is brought
io captive,f wounded, broken, subdued, and
asks only his death1-sentence from her lips.
And here the hearV-of the Queen seems
moved to pardon him. ' We J are mortals
and have erred,' she begins, but in an in
stant the woman's heart is outraged, and
its love turned into jealous hate by Lady
Rutland's impassioned confession of this
mutual love and secret marriage between
herself and Essex. The spirit of the drama
is now reversed. It is the Queen who can
forgire. The woman who cannot. Her
denunciation of this unpardonable sin and
her action up to the signing of the death
warrant give the scene a reality that anni
hilates historic periods of jj years and
awakens a'genuine sympathy for the unfor
tunate lord who is the object of such royal
wrath."
Began Work.
We learn from the Charlotte Observer that
the Carolina Central Company? has begun
work looking to the running pt its track
parallel with A street, and alongside the
track of the North Carolina Railroad. A
small trestle is now being put up to the right
of Trade street's crossing of the N. C. Rail
road, next to the old Rock Island Factory.
Another trestle will be built between the
crossing and the depot of the IN. . C. Rail
road. These trestles will be filled in next
Snrinff. A larce nlatform Willi be built ad-
t O- CJ K . i
joining that of the North .Carolina depot,
the lumber for it, or a large part or it, Be
ing now on the grounds. The platform will
be 130x224 feet. On one sidepf it will be
a wagon way, extending the whole length,
and 80 feet in width. ' This will be three
feet lower than the other part? of the plat
form, in order to afford additional iacilities
for the loading and unloading
of wagons.
The Cotton factory.
The cotton factory is rapidly. approaching
completion and soon the hum of the spin
dles will be heard. As it will no doubt be
the forerunner of many other: such enter
prises, all tending to build up and give our
city a fresh start in the race 6f prosperity
and commercial importance, fwe are anx
ious to see it commence operations. There
is nothing like a commencement in such
things. It begets a spirit of confidence.
