The rates for periods less than one year will be adv tnced as follows: Six mouths, $4 00; lirec months, $2 25; one month, $1 00. : Through a rift in the clouds last night a stray moonbeam, tired of its long imprisonment, stole cautiously into the outer clement and stealthily, trembling ly wended its way earthward. The ab sconding truant, however, was quickly dis covered and snatched back in disgrace to its murky cell. . Almost m Fire. Between 4 and 5 o'clock yesterday after noon a message came to Mayor Canaday, who was at his office in the City Hall, re- i questing bis presence home as quick as pos sible; as it was oeiievea mat ms nouse was on tire. He and Janitor Howard sprang into a buggy and hurried o his (the May or's) residence," followed by City Marshal Robinson and Demitv Marshal Price. The result proved that they were not a whit too prompt in their movements. The fire was found to be among the - wood work in the rear of the mantel-piece, which had to be cut away with an axe in order to reach the flames, which, when the air reached them, burst forth with considerable violence, but were quickly extinguished. The fire was caused by a defect in the chimney and but for its prompt discovery and energetic treatment would have no doubt resulted se riously. . There was no alarm. Arrest of a magistrate. ; ; A colored Magistrate from Long Creek was arrested, by Officer Miller, of the police force, yesterday afternoon,' and lodged in the Guard House. It appears that the functionary alluded to was obstructing the sidewalk in front of the Court House, or was so charged by the officer, who ordered him to one aide. The 'J. ;P. replied that be was already to one , side. The .officer put bis band on bira aud gave him a push, whereupon the J. P. made some , insulting remark to the officer, who immediately : seized the" Long' Creek conservator ef the ''peace and marched him to ' the Guard House, from which he was shortly after re- i leased on bail. . . . - ' m m i County Bible Society. Luckily for the management, as well as for those who wished to be in attendance upon the mask ball at City Hall last night, either as participators or spectators, the ele ments Idid not conspire against them as usual. ?y was cloudy, jt is true, but so rain fell and the streets were comparatively dry, except in certain localities. The result was a large attendance of gay maskers and de lighted spectators, the former in tlfeir varied and handsome costumes, representing many appropriate, striking and amusing charac ters, giving full vent to their enjoyment in the giddy dance, while the latter looked on with pleasure-beaming eyes and smiling countenances in consonance with the gay, mirth-provoking and dazzling scenes of the hour and the occasion. The ball was a de cided success, highly appreciated by those present in the capacity of spectators nd evidently enjoyed to the largest and fullest extent by the immediate participants.
