Philadelphia Times. N Governor Walker's proposition for the General Government to assume the pay meut of the debts of the South ern States, except such obligations as were eouiractei in the interest of re bellion, may be a good platform for a political leader in Virginia, but the Government will annex the moon and (ulinit it as a sovereign State into the Union about the same time that the jiumption programme is adopted by Congress". A very plausible, .argu ment can be made in favor of it, es pecially by one so able as Governor Walker, but it certainly won't win much before the year A. Arrested and Locked Up, I On Tuesday last the authorities of the pity received a telegram from ' Sheriff Mc Millan, of Ivobeson county, stating that a. gentleman of Lumberton had been robbed jof $300 in money, and requesting that a sharp lookout should be kept if or the thieves, three young men who' had been following the Mexican Show in its travels. Yesterday knorning the proprietor of thie show, which jbad arrived ; here the r evening previous, called fit the City Hall and asked for an of ficer, saying that he conld point out two of ithe young men alluded to in! the telegram. lA policeman was sent with him and with bis assistance the two men, named Mathi son and Roial, were arrestedj and taken to jthe Guard House, where they were locked jup for safe-keeping.until the Sheriff of Robe json shall apply for them. The proprietor jof the show deserves muchj credit for his action in the matter. He says the young jmen commenced following the show in Georgia and have injured hiis business no jlittle by representing that t)iey were con inected with it. One of therA had a number iof false keys in his possessian, while both were supplied with equipments for gam bling, &c. Alluding to Miss Dickinson the ' . .... -i: - New York ZTerad! says: "3Iiss Anna E. Dickinson ranks among the most refined and the most sensible of the female lecturers of the day. An ear nest and 'vigorous cnampion iot tne princi ples she upholds, she is, nevertheless, con servative in her views and free from those exaggerated and repulsive sentiments enter tained or affected by many of the women jwho claim to belong to the same school. "When Miss Dickinson appears before an 'audience we may be certain! that she will advance no opinions that may be offensive to good taste, and utter no Words to which a lady can object to listen." The defendant : was found guilty, hut the case was dismissed on the payment of costs. The same, arrested on a 'peace warrant sworn out by Lucy Brinkley,' was ordered to give security in the sum of $100 for bis appearance at the next term of the Superior Court and to keep the peace, in default of which he was committed to pail Alfred Williams, charged with forcible trespass. " I Superior Court The Sheriff informs us that there are sev enty-one cases on the criminal docket re maining over from last Court!, and for whom capiases have been issued jOf these fully one-half have absconded or cannot be found, some of them leaving their bondsmen in the lurch. There is one man against whom there are three cases for larceny, in each of which he is known under a! different name:. From present indications udge Kerr will have his hands full at the approaching term of the Court, which commences on the 19th inst. Boner Bridge. We learn from an eye-witness that a lady and child came near being run ' over on Boney bridge yesterday afternoon by a street car. The space for passing1, it seems, is so limited that she became frightened and nar rowly escaped serious injury, the conductor of the car being unable' to! put the brakes down in time. ; It is very important that a more substantial and convenient, bridge should be placed over this great thorough fare. A Worthy Scheme. f A number of ladies of North Carolina, after consulting together on. the subject, have issued a circular dated at Chapel Fill, in which they : broach the praiseworthy scheme of raising a fund for the support and care of the poor and infirm among their dwn sex in the State. The circular says : --"These ; ladies propose to raise such a sum as will purchase a house, with land At tached, fit it up for occupation, and leave something to be invested for an income. " Appeal is: made to all parties and all de nominations, and it is hoped the appeal' vill not fall on listless ears. " Communications on the subject" may be addressed to Mrs. C' P. I Spencer, Chapel Hill, and reference may be made to Hons. W. H. Battle, W. A Graham, B. Moore and W. N. II. Smith." Ithe 3T- TB- Tlie Rlexlrau Show. , " . The atteudanco at the Mexican circus last nii;ht was rather limited- The accom modations were not superior" or calculated to entice many spectators, i The eutire affair wore the impress of hard usage and wcrse appreciation, i Some of the feats of v ire walking and tumbling,, in which the Jlon- cayo family -took part,: were very goad. There was a mournful lack of variety t ad spirit about the performance. - The minstrel exhibition was sadly )ut and a poor attempt. The performance 1 er minated rather suddenly by the lights go ng out prematurely. There will be an exh: bi tion this afternoon and also one to-night, when the company should strive to g ive more strength and .variety if possible to he performmces.
