All who wish to connect themselves with the company Bbould be present. A grand military bop will be eiven at City Hall on Monday evening, the 19th inst., it being the third anniversary of Company A, Wilmington Rifie Guards; a colored I organization, of, which J., S. "W. Eagles is Captain. . During thTeveningthe company will be addressed by Mayor Cana day, who is Colonel of the Regiment to which it is attached. i - i i Ilia Quarters. J, Ex-Sheriff Schenck, we understand; is occupying comfortable quarters in the jailor's apartments, where he is passing the time of his captivity in as good spirits as circumstances will permit A number of friends called upon him yesterday in the room assigned him and helped to. while away the hours which might otherwise have proven irksome. During the day he was granted an opportunity of visiting the pris oners in the jail, many .of whom expressed a desire to see him. There was one, how ever, who refused an interview with him, restrained, perhaps, by tbe remembrance of some scrape from which, in days gone by, he had been assisted by the Sheriff on the promise of better behavior in the future. It is a queer turn in the wheel of fortune which consigns to prison one who; in the capacity of Sheriff of the county, had in days past been the instrument of placing so many of his constituents in the same unen viable quarters. .-ij. ' . A Race for Liberty. A seaman, a deserter from the British Barquentine Elisabeth Taylor, was arrested yesterday and subsequently arraigned ; be fore "'Justice. Cassidey. After undergoing an examination he was told that he would have to go to jail, for safe-keeping, until his captain should be ready for him, when he suddenly bolted for the door, cleared it at a bound and ran with all i his speed up Princess street 'Several officers and others started iu ! pursuit, and after; chasing him round two or three squares he was finally halted and taken back to the Magistrate's office, from whence he was removed to tbe county jaiL " , t Closing Ulna Up. We karu that Ex-heriff Schenck receiv ed a letter from Dallas, Texas, yesterday, stating that a foundry in that place in which he held an iulerest, and for which he had given a mortgage, with the condition that he could reuew the sarue from time to time. us it became necessary, had been seized and closed in consequence of the report of his arrest. ? - Rietnodlat District Conference. . As we have before announced, the meet ing of the District Conference of the M. E Church, South, is to assemble at Magnolia on Wednesday, the 26th of May, instead of the. 19th, as had been previously stated. This change was made by Rev. Mr. Black, F. E., out of courtesy to the Baptists of Magnolia, with a meeting of which church the session of Conference as at first an nounced would have conflicted. r WILMINGTON, N. C FRIDAY. Tbe Election In Pender Coanty. - ' - Through a special telegram to The Morn ing Star, from Rocky Point, we have the returns from two of the townships in Pen der county, of the election held yesterday for county officers. The vote was as fol lows: " -. - r Rocky Point Township. For Sheriff Wil liams, Con., 98; Gamberg, Rep., 238. For Probate JudgeBryan, Con., 100; Gallo way, Rep., 318. For Register of Deeds McPhcrsoo, Con., 104; Nixon, Rep., 228. For County Seat Rocky Point, 125; South Washington, 171. Eolden Totinship. Tor Sheriff Williams Con., 54; Gamberg, Rep., 71. For Probate Judge Bryan 49; Galloway 75. For Reg ister of Deeds McPberson 54; Nixon 78 For County Seat Rocky Point 5; Burgaw 56; South Washington 68 " The indications, as foreshadowed above, are that the , entire Republican ticket in Pender has been elected, and that South Washington has been chosen as the county seat. Since writiug the above we received in formation that leads us to hope that Thom as Williams, Esq., the Democratic-Conser vative nominee for Sheriff, and two Demo cratic-Conservative County . Commissioners are elected. If this should be the result, the people of Pender may congratulate themselves on having an efficient Sheriff and a good county government. City court. " The following cases were disposed of yes terday morning: C. E. Stromberg, "charged with fighting and other disorderly conduct, ws found guilty; judgment suspended on the pay ment of costs. August Neilson, charged with fighting, &c, was found gnilty; judgment suspended on the payment of costs. James Sullavan, charged with being drunk on the streets, was found guilty and ordered to pay a fine of $5 and the costs. James Sullavan, charged with cursing a police officer while in the discharge of his duty, was found guilty and ordered to pay a fine of $5 and the costs. Martha Williams, charged with disorder ly conduct, cursing and drunkenness on the streets, was found guilty and ordered to pay a fine of $20 or work for thirty days on the streets. Tax Listing. So far; including yesterday, 1,587 persons have listed their real and personal property in this township, being only a little over one-third of the whole number liable to this tax.' Speaking of listing taxes, we learn that the listers, upon recent examination of their documents, found that one person had listed one hundred thousand dollars money in hand and another had listed three mil lion seven hundred thousand dollars solvent credits,1 which at one time looked as if the usury Jaw had not driven the money out of Wilmington to such an extent as had been imagined; but afterward, in both cases, it was found that a mistake bad been made in putting down the cyphers. TIo Bape Case; The case of William Fhinney, charged with attempting to commit rape on the per son of Mary Bell Perkins, a small colored child, came up before Justice VanAmringe yesterday. The evidence of the father of the child and that of Dr. West, county phy sician, was taken, after which the case was continued oyer until this morning at 11 o'clock, owing to the absence of other im portant witnesses. Quite a large number of persons, both white and colored, . were present to listen tq the examination. Catholic missions. The Redemptionists of the Catholic church have been attracting large crowds at their mission recently held in Richmond, Va. At the close of the mission Tuesday, the mis. sionaries divided in two parties; one party will visit in this State, Raleigh, Fayette ville, Newbern, Newton drove, Wflming. ton, Charlotte, Gaston and Cabarrus.' They will remain sometime at each place, giving a series of sermons. To City subscribers. . ....J.. . Beginning April 1, Mr. - Samuel Davis takes charge of the entire city circulation efTHE Morning Stab; and from that date all subscriptions will be payable to him. He jwill serve the paper pearly and regularly, and hopes all his subscribers will , pay promptly, as he has to meet his engage ments with tbe proprietor whether the sub scribers pay him punctually or not. tf Accident We regret to learn that Henry Penny, a youth employed in the Pre&ylenan office, had one of his hands badly crushed yester day by getting it caught in the machinery of the large power press in that establish ment. The general outline, beauty of proportion and excellent finish, are all that could be desired, and more than- meets my expectations. I am more than ever impressed with the idea that it is as necessary for a man to have a gun built to meas urement as to have a boot so built to ensure a good lit. The pattern 175 and penetration 40 are very su perior. The pattern is as close as I desire, and the penetration I think is seldom attained, being far ahead f any public record which I have seen.
