There was no mail from any point njjith of Weldon last night, the mails having missed connection at that point. City subscribers who fail to re ceive tbeir papers regularly will please re port the fact promptly at this office. tf The first company drill of the reorganized 1 Wilmington Light Infantry took place last night at the armory of that company. - ; ) s- Breaking: Into at Store. On Sunday night last some person or persons attempted lo enter the store of Mr. J. I. Metts, which is located on Water si reet near Market, by trying to remove a board fpom under the door in the alley-way in the rear. It seems that the party must have failed in that, and attempted to take the bricks from around a window for the purpose of effecting an entrance. This, too, must ihave, been a failure, for it ap pears that i a window upon the roof was forced open and the store entered in that way. A bag of nuts were missed and ten cents in currency. A box of papers, it appears, was broken open as if to search for moneyv and the papers contained in it were scattered about the alley. Nothing else was lost. . Good for Doebi. During the examination of one of the witoesses for the defence in the mill-pond cae yesterday,- and while the witness was informing the jury that he bad frequently been up the . pond gunning, Judge Kerr, like a true and youthful Nimrod, as he is, asked the witness if it was a good pond for clucks. Witness replied that it was; and from that moment the case was decided in Hie rn'md of this writer. No mill-pond that is "good for ducks" would ever be found guilty of endemici-miasmatic-malarial-vege-tiible-debris iii the first degree if we were on the jury that tried the case. UnraalUble Letter?. The following is a list of un mailable let ters remaining in the city post-office at Wilmington, April 27: Moses Fisher, Bay River; Isaac Cobitt, Black River, Thos. J. Gill, Lauringburg, N. U., box 39:-Miss Annie Jordan, Grist Station, N. C; W. T. Crome, Point Cash- well, N. C. ; J.' P. Price, Bogue Swamp, Change of Management. Air. Charles R. Jones, who has for a long ume been connected with the National Uotel, has assumed the proprietorship of that house, as will be seen by a card pub iiahed in this issue. Mr. Jones is young aud energetic, and from a long acquain tance with the business will be enabled to give satisfaction. ' HE VOL. XVI; NO. 32. Superior Coart. This Court convened at the usual hour yesterday morning. During the day the following cases were disposed of:, . State vs. Charles Hansley, for larceny. Jury still out State vs. Joe Bowie .alias Sandy Louis, charged with larceny. Verdict guilty, and prisoner sentenced to three years imprison ment in the county work house. State vs. Thos. C. Mcllhenny. In this case the defendant-was indicted tor a nuis ance, he being the owner of a millpond sit uated near the southern portion of the city, which millpond, the prosecution charged, was detrimental to the health of many citi zens residing near it on account of the miasma which arose frorii its surface in some seasons of the year. 1 The hearing of the case was very interesting and occupied much of the time of the court. Several of our prominent physicians ! were examined as medical, experts. Their evidence was mainly of a technical character. Several old residents of our city were examined to show the length 6f time the pond had tx isted. One had known of-its existence for sixty years, another for fifty and others for periods of time from that until about thirty years. The case throughout attracted much attention. After a hearing of the case the jury rendered a verdict pf "not guilty" without leaving their seatsJ i The case of the State vs. Henry Wilson, colored, for burglary, in;' which the jury had on Thursday rendered a verdict of guilty, came up yesterday on a motion made in arrest of judgment, because of a defect in the bill of indictment, under which the prisoner was convicted. The motion was argued by counsel and allowed by the Court The Stale hen" accepted a verdict of larceny in this case. Pontofflee Regulations. ; We have heretofore called attention to the important fact that newspapers, sam pies, &c, are charged at the rate of o cent for each ounce or fractional part there of and cannot be sent unless full postage is paid when mailed. Many papers do not reach their destination for want of postage. In cases where a paper weighing over one ounce contains only a one cent stamp it is thrown into the waste basket, and therefore never reaches its destination. . ; - Persons should take notice of the post office requirements and act in accordance with them if they desire to have the above class of matter safely delivered. Tbe CU7 Bill. The case regarding the pity government, between A. H. Yanbokkelen and others against W. P. Canaday and others, will come up for argument this morning before the Superior Court The case has been brought before the Court by a writ of quo warranto sued out before the clerk of that tribunal by the new Board, io which tbe members of that Board appear as plaintiffs again t the present city- government. Messrs. Strange and Davis appear for the plaintiffs, and Messrs. Russell and Cant well for tbe defendants. 1 ftobbery of Poulirjf - Warrants were yesterday afternoon sued out before S. VanAmringe, J. P., for the apprehension of Glascow Hill and Neadham Paine, two -colored boys aged about 18 years eachwho, it was alleged, had en tered the premesis of Mr. L. M. Williams, on Princess street about 10 o'clock A. H., and stole a lot of poultry therefrom. ; Paine was arrested, but Hill still eludes the vigi lance of the officers of the law. To -City Subscribers.! Beginning April 1, Mr. Samuel Davis takes charge of the entire city circulation of THEMoKNiNa Stab;' and from that date all subscriptions will be payable to him. He will serve the paper early and regularly, and hopes all his subscribers "will pay promptly, as he has to meet his engage ments with the proprietor whether the sub- cribers pay him punctually or not. i tf . The revival con tinues with great interest ly The Norfolk Landmark will canvass this State thoroughly in aid of its publication, Vance's " Sketches of North Carolina," shortly to be issued. It says: The indications of success are more flat tering even than we had hoped for in the beginning. The Ways and Means Commit tee of tbe Mecklenburg Centennial Associ ation are calling upon all parties having funds to aid the celebration to forward them to Mr. J. C. Burroughs, treasurer, at once. The contracts are now beingjexecuted and the money is needed. - Publication having been made by mistake that the Legislature had passed an act giving assistance to soldiers of the Confederacy who lost limbs in its service, the Raleigh Capital states that no such -act passed, though, it did pass the Senate. That paper says acting on this wrong informa tion several persons had already arrived in Raleigh for this purpose. Acknowledging the invitation to our Centennial, Governor Beveridge, of Illinois, writes: T should, like to be present on that occasion, to renew my devotion to my country, and gather the inspiration of our father?, but public duties will prevent I hope your celebration will be. a grand succ68, and kiudle auew the nres of patriotism in many an 'American heart.
