Hussey, Esq, Js a native of an ad" joining county, and a young man of ability and experience, speaks in the handsomest manner of Wilmington. Omitting the par ticulars of the recent Press' Convention, which he attended with other Western ed itors, Mr. Hussey devotes more than a col umn of editorial to eulogizing eur city and snowing its numerous good points. It is alluded to as having Vthe solidity of a slow growth and the laurelled history of noble endeavor and a, splendid, chivalrous and hospitable people.?' "Its society.? sava the Landmark; 'la luminous with the qualities of genuine social resplendency, the rare i :i. . oreeamg mat comes from the double source ef birth and culture.1' . 9(.the business prospects the Landmark siais"hofulij view of previous unsuccessful attempts to clear the harbor of obstructions. I( depre cates the cemmercial vassalage of North Carolina to neighboring and distant States, and rightly predicts that the present efforts will end in Wilmington having the largest import and export trade of any city on the (South) Atlantic, coast. , The Landmark promises to recur to the subject. 'r The Asheville Vi&en. whose editor. Mr: Robert M. Turman, remained some days in the city after the Association adjourned, writes a full account of the festivities and of what he saw in our city.vAcknowledg- ing courtesies extended to the fraternity by the Twin Brothers Society! the Board of Trade, officers of the Ralefgb( Produce Ex change Nevassa Guana Woris, and others, the Citizen proceeds to say somethings of our city's prospects that are fully warranted by facta, and for which we are very much indebted to our western contemporary which, seems to take a lively Interest in the material prosperity of the1 State. We quote: - - Of Wilmington, very much can be said. As a harbor, it is the equal of any on the Atlantic coast, and far superior to many which have already attained importance in tne commercial world, angress and egress is always safe and easy, for the laree ocean vessels, while the direct communication by rail wiiu me . eunre country, me srreat West, North-west and South, is scarcely surpassed by our far more patronized Northern . porta. Several important rail roads now center at Wilmington, having connections ramifying our entire South, and several other lined, terminating at, or tending to the same point; are in prospect or completion. Already large steamers 1 and sail vessels are running direct from Wilmington to the ports of the world, the West Indies,: Europen, North and South America. Every opportunity is now of fered to make North, Carolina port the cen ter of trade and commerce, not only for our State but .for: the South and West, and this concentration of 1 Interests and trade only - is necsssary i to make a seaport what New York, Philadelphia, and Boston- have become. Wilming ton has claims - upon the ' State -which are too great and pressing to be longer dis regarded. We have heard vastly much of " State pride," State lines," &c., &c, but now is the time for ; something tangible in that direction to be done We do not. ask I that hostile legislation be) inaugurated against any interest, railroad br other; but very much can be done by the Legislature, and our own people themselves, to make Wilmington what she ought to be, and is destined, sooner or later, to be. " . ' The completion of the Carolina Central Railway gives to our State the only oppor tunity left 16 make Wilmington the entre port of the State. Now extend the Western N. C. Road to Asheville, Ducktown and Paint Rock,1 giving the Wilmington route the preference, and what was once wisely desired, viz: a grand trunk line traversing the entire length of the Btate, will be real ized. The people of Wilmington seem thor oughly awake to their interests and claims upon the people ana state, ana we are sure will spare nothing on their part to deserve the "fullest patronage and : confidence' of their iellow citizens. Her business men are behind none in energy, sagacity, public spirit and enterprise. As to the perwneUe of her. business, people nri Mfiuni thfin ara tne ennaia or anv in the worlds We are altogether proud of our city by the sea and her good people, and shall from time to time take occasion to say something of both.
