The manner of it was as related below:. . , , i . i Yesterdav mornlne an enzine and train of ten cars left Charlotte for a point a short distance beyond Long Creek, for a load of wood. The train had on it an engineer and conductor, and twelve colored train hands. After all the cars had been loaded the train started on its return and, arriving at lhe bridge, which has long been considered un safe, slackened speed to about two and a half miles an hour. The train was running backward at the time, or rather the engine was pushing the cars before it " When about half wav across, the rails Darted under the fifth car from the engine, and the; five cars and tne engine . passed through the opening thus made; to - the .- ground a distance of about fifty ; feetf Three negroes were suuns on the eneme's niiot. and went down headforemost, the engine on top., of them. Two-of these,'Jobn McGebee. and Prince Woods, must have' been ..killed in. stantly, at least they were dead when! ex tricated from the place where they were wedged in. The negroes, McKinney, Barnes, Gray; and Car ter, though railing with the wood, and some of them with ears above them, were not badly hurt, except Barnes, whose right shoulder was mashed. -.-..- i ' One of the most siorular things of the ac cident, was that, just as' the engine went through, the coupling pin: holding! it and the tender together, broke, 'and the latter stood still upon tbe abutment oMhe bridge; As the engine was falling; Mr. Thomas Smith the engineer, had the presence , of mind to crawl back on the tender and save himself.; Io doing so be received a slight cut in the temple.
