WILMINGTON, A Narrow Escape. , .; ' v " y . r Yesterday morning, between l and 1 o'clock, officers Davis and Green, of. the police force, found -a man lying on the sand in the dock at tlie foot , of Market street, .fast asleep, while the tide, which was gradually rising, was slowly enveloping him in its deathly folds. - It appears that he had been in bathin tr while under the influ ence of intoxicating stimulants, and had succumbed to the drowsiness which natur ally comes over a man who has drank, too deeply and goes into the' water to "cool off." Twq other persons had been in bath ing with the individual, but, failing . to in duce him to come out and dress after being in the water the proper i length of lime went up the street and reported the facts to t'e policemen. Qa .a wharf '.log near by '-was the clothing 'vt--the " drtwsy swimmer, in the pockets of which was a valuable gold watch and $40 in currency, which .be was lucky in finding undisturbed. It was' certainly a narrow escape on" the part of the dabbler in rippling waves, as in ten' minutes more, had not the Knights of the Star and Baton appeared on ; the scene, he would have been a fit subject for Coronor Hewlett's scrutinizing investigation. We did ' not ascertain the name of the party.' i Bra itawlck Cob nir ' We learn that the Radical head-centres have employed a lot of "fellows of the baser sort" to work up thier waning cause in Brunswick county until the election is over. Tbey are attempting to operate on the pre judices of the uneducated whites in the lower Townships, hoping thereby to secure their votes for the Radical candidates , ;. - We hear, moreover, that U. S. Deputy Marshals are to be stationed at some of the precincts on Ihe day of election for the' al leged purpose of preventing frauds, but for the real purpose, no doubt, of trying to over awe the whites. ' . If we do not mistake the temper of our friends in Brunswick, this" little game will do us no harm. The Conservatives only want, and they intend to have, a fair elec tion. And this: is something by the way, tbey. have not always had in that county. Mr. Rosafy will not be ollowed to sleep with the ballot-boxes this time, even though U. S. Deputy Marshals may be thick as blackberries in Brunswick. v j Let the gallant Conservatives of Bruns wick, rouse themselves. They have only to go to the polls and vote, and then see that the ballot-boxes are not Rosafied, and they will elect Cowan by a handsome ma jority." Aa ExelllnK Time. Last night considerable excitement was caused iu the vicjuily of. The most excrucia ting cries then went up from the throat of the latter individual, as she waltzed about the vicinity with a sugar bowl poised on her cranium. Sergeant Euhl add policeman Jeffrey Wise were summoned to tho spot by the cries and excitement that ensued, but they arrived to find that Delaney had departed, and taken refuge in the back part of an 'adjacent "lot, where they followed "him. i He, however, like' a?' true hero Tof V hundred bottles, succeeded in getting on the opposite . side of a large pile of empty; bottles when pitched battle ensued and the kir was full of hurling missiles.
