We learn that the residence of Mr. J. N.
Ilinton, of the firm of Grant & Hinton, has
been three times robbed within a.month
past, and a fourth attempt was frustrated.
Friday rtght about 9 o'clock some daring
scoundrel-entered the back yard of the
house and carried off some pillows and
other light, articles while the family were
sitting in the front porch. On two former
occasions small sums of money were ob
tained, and one night ' last week a burglar
was shot at by a neighbor while in the act
of attempting an entrance to the same
premises.
One night recently, we are informed, an
attempt was made to enter the house of
Mr.. R. H. Grant, senior member of the
same firm as the above, located at the cor
ner of Seventh and Chestnut streets, but a
dog confined in the yard , made sufflcien
noise in attempting to get at the intruder to
awaken Mr. Thomas A. Sheppard, an oc
cupant of the house, who seized his gun
and, creeping to the open window, snapped
it right in the burglar's face. The gun
failed to respond, but the man at the win
dow immediately dropped the sash, the gun
catching undenreath,;Mr.JSheppard at one
pulled it out and passed to another window,
where he got a full view of the retreating
burglar as he climbed the fence, hut again
the gun Snapped, i, Mr. Sheppard then
called for help, but when it came the thief

HOW TO 0 1SPOSB OV BOGDESt
Editoks Stab: I desire to' call attention
to an outrage that the citizens of Wilming
ton have loDg enough submitted to an
outrage which seems either to be beyond
the ; control of the city government or, if
within its control, an evil, which it has fail
ed even to check. I refer to the daily or
rather nightly stealing which is constantly
being: carried on; in our city. In ?other
cities, especially in the North and West,
men will not submit to having their prem
ises invaded and their , property constantly
stolen. There vigilance' committees make
short shrift of tramps. Here we need. some
thing of the kind. No political crusade.
but an alliance, an organization of honest
men, both negro and white,.for their own
protection, and to rid i themselves of these
thieving scoundrels, who, too lazy to work,
nightly invade the premises of honest men
and. deprive them of the fruits of their
labor. Let this matter be kept before the
people until there is some action taken to
put a stop to this evil, and a speedy one.

Hudson Citt, N. J., Sept 30th, 1874. Mbssbs. J.
& W. Toilet 29 Maiden Lane,? New York:-The
10-gaage Gun No. 3078 1 ordered from you gives me
entire satisfaction. I waa very exacting when or
dering the Gun, hat must say that you have more
than fulfilled what I required of you.; I have shot
several breech-leaders by first-class makers, and
your gua beats them all for beauty and workman
ship. Aa for shooting qualities, your gun shoots
stronger and more even than any gun I ever shot I
have shown it to several good judges (including
first-class gunmakere) and all agree that the action
is very strong and durable, and that the gun la one
of the beet they ever saw. I have made soma very
long shot! with It, using only Z drs. of powder,
which hi all your gun requires. I have shot It at a
targat according to the rules of the Turf, Field and
Farm trials- and the average of 6 skota at 40
yards Is: Left-pattern, 169; penetration, I
right-pattern, ' 175; penetration 39; using
drs. powder. NowI am -.aura such a gun
la seldom met with, and am very proud to be
the owner of It But the real test of your gun
is in. the field there it excella all others, killing
cleaner and handsomer than any gun I ever saw, as
you assured me they would. Both paper and metal
shells work splendidly." Gentlemen, I have to offer
you my very best thanks, and will recommend your
gums to all my friends.
, . , , Yours Bespectfully, !
, HXHBT LOBIOT.
