WILMINGTON,
A Bad Habit.
Those who go down to the river at night
to enjoy the breeze and watch tbe boats
may perhaps, so far as some of them are
concerned, learn a lesson of paramount im
portance from the fate of the unfortunate
colored man who was drownpd off Nell's
wharf a few nights since. It is a particu
larly 'dangerous practice for any one to sit
on the wharf with his feet hanging over tbe
river, or to lie at full length on the wharf
near the edge, with his head supported by a
post, as some are in tbe habit of doing. A
moment's pause in the conversation or a
lull in the interest of tbe scenes going on
about one may very readily furnish an or
portunity for a nod or other movement
which may prove fatal. The extreme edge
of the wharf is a dangerous place, for many
reasons that might be mentioned, at any
time, and at night the tendency to sleep
after tbe completion of the labors of the
day renders it especially dangerous, and
should have a potent influence to keep
loungers at a safe distance,
Magistrate's Court.
A colored woman by the name of Enema
Burton was arraigned before Justice Van
Amringe, yesterday morning on a' peace
warrant sworn out by Eliza Finch, also col
ored, who made affidavit that the dashing,
gushing and apparently good humpred de
fendant bad threatened to cowhide her and
use other violence against her.- The case
proved to be a sort of Beecher-Tilton affair
and the defendant was ordered to give bond
in the sum of $100 for her appearance at
Court and to keep tho peace.
Willis'Stewart, charged on the complaint

Visiting Flocks. .
Owing to the absence on summer leave
of a number of our city pastors, the various
Methodist and Episcopal churches were on
Sunday particularly favored with the pres
ence of members of flocks just now sbep
berdless. The congregations of the other
churches, too, whose ministers have had
their vacations and returned or have thought
they would be able best to rest themselves
by undertaking new labors of good will,
were generally sprinkled over with unac
customed faces. We hope that both the
visitors and visited found the occasion profit
able by reason of its opportunities for tbe
enlargement of their sympathies by tbe in
dulgence of their mutual kindly feelings.
Tbe Festival.
The ladies of Fifth Street M. E Church
had a pleasant time at their bouquet festival
last nigbt. The attendance of both gentle
men and ladies was large, there were no
untoward occurrences to mar the quiet en
joyments of the occasion, and it is hoped
and believed that those who gave their time
and best efforts to secure the success of the
entertainment have had reason to be satis
fied when they saw of the fruits of their
travail.
Damper. .
The shower yesterday afternoon came
just at a time to spoil all the well laid plans
for many a shopping and visiting excursion.
It fell like a wet blanket upon spirits that

Vere a!few who rallied afterward, put on

been no shower.

entire satisfaction. I was very exacting when or
dering the Qua, bat must tsy that you have more
than fulfilled what I required of you. ' I have shot
several ' bretch-le-aders by first-class makers, and
your guu beau them all for beauty and workman
ship. Aa for shooting qualities,' your guc shoots
stronger and more even than any gun I ever shot I
have shown it to several good judges (including
nrtft-claes gunmakert) and all agree that the action
U very strong and durable, and that the gun is one
of the best they ever saw. I have made some very
long shots with it, using only ZX dra. of powder,
which is all your gun requires. I hae shot It at a
targat according to the rules of the Turf, Field and
Farm trials, and the average of 6 shots at 40
yards Is: Left-pattern, 169; ' penetration, : 38;
right-pattern, 175; penetration 39; using Z
dra. powder. Now I am . sure such a gun
Is seldom met with, and am very proud to be
the owner of it But the real test of your gun
is in the field there It ex cells all others, killing
cleaner and handsomer than any gun I ever saw, as
you assured me they would. Both paper and metal
shells work splendidly. Gentlemen, I have to offer
you my very best thanks, and will recommend your
guas to ail my friends.
