Bridgers, Jr., Esq., of Tarboro,. who was sent for soon after the sad occurrence to act as counsel in the case. According to bis statement " Murray was not a son of the Sheriff of the county, as it was reported, and the statement that Strange was threatened with lynching is" all bosh. The cause of the trouble was as followss When Murray came up behind hand with his vehicle, he, A was told by Strange that he was paid f of the trip and that he was two hours behind time. 4 Mur ray replied tharheacC to "bave'liis' horse shod and came as soon as be could. Strange said, ' You had five hours notice and that is np. excuse. . Murray retorted by saying. whoever says Iliad five hours' notice is a liar. Strange then said, ' ' I say so, do you intend it for me?' ' Murray says, you can take it if you like,' jumping down from the hack remarking, .'I can whip any two of you. Strange grasped a chair ; ana at tempted to strike him, but was stopped l-y bis friends " The party then drove on about thirteen miles from Waynesvllle when a wheel broke down and the driver of ihe wagon went off to a neighboring blacksmih shop to have U repaired. Murray whd drove the "hack. then gave the party a cushion and blanket and they went off aside a hundred yards to engage in a game of euchre to while away the time. After awhile some one was heard coming up the road and all with" the excep tion of Strange went in that direction to see whether it was the man with the broken wheel. Strange in the meantime remarking to Preston Bridgers, where is your pistol.fjlr. Haar's part was in all probability owing I don't see it in your overcoat?' Bridgers replied, ' don't shoot away all my cartridges, I haven't many, lo which Strange said, all right, I merely want a few shots.' Murray was sitting near the, spatterboard of the hack and Strange Bhortly afterwards ap proached him saying, Iwant to settle this" matter with you peaceably; you called me a liar and I want you to take it back, as I am unwilling for you to go further with us after what you have said.' . A woman work ing near by swore that blie heard this re mark. -. Mnrray replied, " you said t had five hours' notice, and folks Jhat tell lies must expect to be called so.' He had a knife and a stick in his hand when be said this and stixnl up. Strange, who also had a small stick, struck him and Murray ad vanced on Mm with the knife drawn. Strange then" said lo him ' I have a pistol in my pocket and if you come on me with that knife I will shoot you," Murray stopped a moment. Then Strange said, " lay down your knife and that stick and I will cover it with the pistol and fight it out witnyou even if vou are 30 or 40 lbs. heavier.' Murray Tefused and advanced again. Strange said, I tell you for thejast time if you come on me with that knlfe l will shoot you on the SDOt so sure as there is a God.' He con tinued to advance and when he got within a few paces, Strange,' who was standing by Ihe roadside; fired. The shot did not take instantaneous effect and he advanced a step or two more and fell. , B9U1 the knife and stick were found in bis hands after death. " Both Strange and Bridgers are still in jail, the latter declining to take advantage of bail,- as Strange is. still held in custody.
