Attempted Swindle A rreat : of IM Two colored individuals, named , Jake liutoq and Charlie Q wens, were arrested ; yesterday afternoon on; the charge, ef at-. tempting to swindle a colored brother froni Rocky Point, or that neighborhood, by the name, of .John Mclntire. : It seema that Jake Hinton met Mclntire on the wharf and proposed to .'sell him:a gun. After talking about the-matter' awhile Hinton im vited Mclntire 'to accompany him to the,' old postefflce alley, which proposition thei alter acceded to. After proceeding some distance in the alley Hinton halted and drew a package of photograph' cards from his pocket, proposing to Mclntire to draw from the package and 'see if he could get the prize card; but Mc. didn't show much disposition to dabble in 'such matter;. HirJ- too then gave a peculiar whistle, which was followed by the appearance on the ground of" his confederate, Charley Owens, , who proposed to bet the country brother that he could nut draw the. prize card. Mclntire declined. Informing the delectable pair that he had heard of - such tricks be fore, and that he , had noT disposition to in vest. While this scene was going on, the two professors of 'string-garae" continuing to banter their would-be victim,' with the lopejthat some of his hard-earned green backs would yet come within their grasp, there had been an unobserved witness of the attempted swindle in the person of Charles Mallett, Jr., who quietly slipped off and informed officer W. H. Howe of the facts. In the iuterval, the parties in the alley separated, the two swindlers making an eiijH:' mi-nt with Melntire to meet him again on t:?e wiiarl. iinuon anu uwens priK-i-i-ded up Market street to some point betwreu Front and -Second, where they am down on an empty goods box to con sult as to their future movements. ' Here they were found by officer Howe and h4 colleague, Mallett, when they were arrest-' ed and taken to the Guard House. In the meantime, ' however, ninton, who had probably had his suspicions aroused, had disposedof his cards, but Mallett, who had kept his eye on his movements, soon had them in bis possession, and Hinton af terwards confessed to Mallett that they were some cards used in the attempt to swindle. We examined the cards and on two of them found private marks and on a third, written with a pencil, figures repre senting $10.00. Hinton and Owens were each required to give a justified bond in the sum of $500 for their appearance before the City Court on Friday morning, in de fault of which they were locked up, a3 be fore stated Mclntire was retained as a witness in the affair. The Club now holds its grounds? under a lease or ten years, but it has : been . thought de sirable by some of the members that they should be owned in fee. ! ' ' A considerable number of applications for membership were received and acted upon at this meeting. i ! We yesterday morning took a walk over from the end of the street railroad track at the Cemetery to have a look at the progress of improvement at the ground of the Club.. ' A very large. 1 amount, of . worfc has been doue here in the way of grading.and the entire plot, with the. exception of the rifle-range and terraces at the sides: will soon be as, level as a floor. .- The .work Of cover' ing the grounds with turf will! bow be pushed to completion rapidly. v .The lay of the land - could - scarcely be better for the purposes to which 'It has been devoted, being high and dry; with ample drainage toward the creek and a neighboring ravine. As the descent on these sides' is consider able.the edge of the campus will.be thrown into three sodded terraces and planted wiih vines and shrubs to prevent washing, and flower-plots will finally be laid efcj At tble bottom of the terraces on the south will be constructed the rifle-range, and just inside the high fence enclosing the entire grounds will be a carriage-driye. The fence is now in an advanced state. Entrance is had by an arched portal fronting the west and. coh-i stantly in charge of a lodge-keeper. - 1 ; i Before the opening, a hail about 100 feet long by 15 feet wide, with the side fronting the grounds composed of sliding doors, Will be erected just within the enclosure. This? hall wiil be well seated; and Jn case of rain will afford ample'' shelter' to the ladies and other spectators. ' At' night fit will be lighted up and used as a gymnasium.. Capt.
