Yesterday morning just before dawn a fellow of unusual slipperiness went through a large house on North Front street. He entered ; an open' window v opening on second-floor piazza,' passed through a room in which a gentleman was sleeping, then down stairs where it appears he disturbed nothing, but was probably frightened by the awakening of a small boy servant. This boy heard the stealthy steps of the man and caught a glimpse of his retreating form as it disappeared at the head of the steps. Thinking it was one of the inmates of the house, he says, he made no alarm The burglar tried to open one or two doors on the passage, which being locked balked -him again of his booty. Passing into the room by which he had entered.he gathered up two coats and other wearing apparel of the still steadily Sleeping occupant, and was making his exit from the . window when his foot tripped over an Indian club used for gymnastic practice, which had been left standing before the window. The noise of the fallinz club roused the athletic sleeper, who in a second compre hended the situation, grasped the club, jumped through the window after the fleet ing thief, and, close behind him, slid down the banistering of the porch. Too late to catch the invader of his chamber's peace and property, whom he discovered to be a negro, he returned to find the articles scat tered on the floor and in the window, but nothing was missing. A little later in the morning a gentleman who lives next door to the house entered was aroused by the effort of some one to push up the sash of his bedroom window. He did not get a peep at the would-be bur glar. Doubtless it was the same bold thief who came so near being knocked in the head by the Indian club. Moral for two: Let good citizens keep their doors aud windows secured. . Let early morning prowlers beware of disturb ing the rooms of gentlemen athletically in clined. Recbablte Election. At the regular meeting of New Hanover Tent No. 57, L O. of R., held last evening, the following officers were elected for the ensuing term: P. C. R. James Kendrick. S. J. W. Hewett. C. R. Thomas E. Skipper. D. R. S. W.Holden. R. S. James Alderman. F. S. F. T. Skipper. T. W. L. Jacobs. I. J. M. Newton. L G. M. P. White. O. U. G. W. Banes. We learn that the Lodge is iu a flourish ing condition, and has done a good work in restoring to public and social esteem some who were once classed as "hard cases." Let the work go on ! The officers just chosen assume their new duties next Tuesday evening. Opera flouae. There, was a good attendance at the Opera House last night to witness the second performance of the Buffalo Bill, Texas Jack and Morlacchi company. To those who admire the sensational in art the visit of this company has been a rare treat. The applause and encores with which many of the passages were received attested the pleasure they excited in those who saw and heard. A lavish expenditure of paint and gunpowder brought the stories we have all heard of the savage warfare of the frontier vividly to mind, and the inter mingling of humor and sentiment conveyed some idea of the amenities which make the hard life of the plains endurable. The versatility of M'lle Morlacchi proves her the possessor of considerable talent, and Ler dancing was especially pleasing. Superior Court. In the Superior Court, yesterday, the case ot Jeffrey Williams, convicted of larceny, heretofore alluded to.was again taken under consideration, and judgment suspended on the payment of costs defendant being re quired to give a bond in tbe sum of $500 for his good behavior and also for his per sonal appearance at the next term of .the Superior Court, when a suitable fine may be imposed instead of a sentence to im prisonment. . I.- The remainder of the session of the Court was taken up with the consideration of the case of Thomas Payne, charged with forci ble trespass, which was finally continued over, with all other cases on the criminal docket to Thursday, when a discrimina tion will be made in favor of parties who are confined in jail.
