Mr. Golt didn't get f 50,000 out of the Boston Herald for calling Cardiff Giant a humbug, f Tbe Presidency. Philadelphia Star.l Since the Ohio election a very labored effort has been made by the leading Democratic and independent papers to create the impression that Gov. Tilden is the coming man for the Presidential candidacy. Snch may "be the case, but if Mr. Tilden really has any aspirations in the di rection of the White House, and there is every reason to believe he has, he will do well to call off his friends for a while. Experience has almost universally demonstrated that the men pressed for the Presidency a year in advance of the nomination rarely attain their object. Mr. Blaine, and a number of other Republicans, whose friends in judiciously, thrust them upon public notice, are now praying the penalty of this indiscretion, and without as suming to be a prophet, a like fate will attend Gov. Tilden if his admir ers do not hold their horses. LRichmondjDispalch.l The moves upon - the Presidential chess-board have been slightly modi fied by the Ohio election. It has done nothing for those mpn who have been counting upon it to advance their prospects. It has pretty well cleared the decks of political hacks. We sus pect that the next President has not been named yet; and, more than ever, the political grumblers of New York are warned that that State is not tbe world, and that a State which named two Presidential candidates to be beaten will not be allowed to name the third. Governor Tilden is a local politician of local education and hab its, and lie will so remain. It is the idlest thing in the world to be press ing him upon a people who are entire ly indifferent towards him. -: Cosily Nonsense at Fnnerals. ' N. Y. Snn.l ' . On Sunday last a member of aNa tiooal Temperance Society was buried at Greenwood; ! The hearse was fol lowed by eighty-three carriages, some filled and others but partly filled. The coffin was an expensive box, and the flowers could not have cost less than $500. This sort of thing should be stopped, , Poor people make geese of themselves in. rivalling each other at these ceremonials, and the rich well the rich are simply absurd. The extravagance of funeral ceremonials has increased to such a degree in this country as to became a serious burden to the living, and to lead to the formation of funeral reform soci eties. The movement has made greater advance in Great Britain than in the United States, but it will unquestionably grow into favor here. The rural deaneries of England have taken up the subject with eanrest negg, and have substantially reached three conclusions: (1) That greater simplicity in funerals is desirable; (2) that when it is possible the friends in attendance should walk to the grave; (3) that hatbands, scarfs and gloves should no longer be given to the offi ciating clergymen. An association recently formed in London has for its object the dispouragement of the use of mourning apparel. It proposes to substitute a simple band or trimming of black on the person. This reform will find favor with persons who be lieve that the sombre colors which we use so profusely on funeral occasions are out of keeping with the Christian ideas of death and immortality. Important to National Banks. Speaking of the decision to which we referred yesterday, the Philadel phia Inquirer says: "It has always been held by the Supreme Court ot the United States that the Constitution is the supreme law of theHaifd, and that decisions made at common law, and under the organic laws of the States, are subor dinate thereto.
