We have always conceded to Mr. Blaine the possession of very consid erable ability. In addition to a sup pleness to which no other Republican politician can lay inst, claim since the day of Butler, he is thoroughly ac- compagned m all the ans of the po litical school to which he belongs and of which he is now an acknowledged teacher and exemplar. Indeed we are inclined to accord to the ex Speaker some of the belter qualities of statesmanship. : He appears to have profited by the jjrave mistakes of his own party and to be ever ready to take advantage of any weakness on the part of his Democratic enemies. Skilf al, dextrous, wiry, able, popular, brave, Mr. Blaine appears to be play ing a high game for the Presidency. Grant at Des Moines sounded the slogan of fanatical war, it is true, but Blaine took up the refrain at its best note and drowned or almost drowned his chief's music by suggesting prac tically the more reasonable part of what the President had only hinted at, the abolition of special donations to denominational schools. lie is now watching the St. Louis revela tions with the keenest eaircrncss. The other formidable opponent of the third term, Mr. Brisiow, of Kentucky, is a somewhat younger man in politics and iu years. lie lias the advautago of occupying a seat, in the Cabinet where he can watch the battle from anear, and cut his indi vidual cards accordingly. If the present whiskey fraud investigation, which was set on foot by the Honor able Secretary of the Treasury, shall "pan out" as doubtless be desires, he will have General Grant under the table and a nip-and-tuck conflict, with the man of Maine for the nomination. Bristow's chance lies in whiskey, though he is personally as sober as a judge. Blaine's opportunity is with the Protestant schoolmen, although his logic is usually of trie most prac tical kind. Grant's occasion will be when all the Federal officials and rings congregate, with Sambo at their back, in national convention. j The principal hinge -. n which the ! door presidential, so-fav as the norai I nation is concerned, will turn, judg ing from appearances ai this writing, is the question of religious prejudice. This issue is a bad one ;'or the Repub licans to make, and Mr. Blaine and oiner leaders may conclude not to make it. But. as it is i:.:.v up, fully presented by leading Itpubiiea; newspapers aud politicise?, .we shai tn;I.J them to it. They have brought the business np in meeting, and ihev eannot escape the consequences of odiuni that will ensue, no matter whether they shall prers it to the end r no. . Waddell, of the Third North Carolina District, pro viding for a Democratic Executive Committee. The Committee will consist of three Senatori,Tix,Ilepre sentalives and three citizens of tfie District of Columbia, all to be ap pointed by the Chairman of the caucus. Hon. S. S. Cox's resolution providing for a committee of eleveu, tobelikewise appointed by the Chair, to outline the policy and woikof the party in the future, was adopted. Col. Lamar of Mississippi presided, and Maj. Kobbins of the 7th North Carolina District was one of the Sec retaries, Gen. Banning of Ohio hav ing been the other. The caucus resolved to .reduce tax ation and expenses. The James O. Broad head who-takes the place of ex-Senator Henderson in the whiskey prosecutions at St. Louis is a Democrat, and we think, the same man to whom the celebrated Broad head letter in thw Seymour and Blair campaign was addressed." As far as he can he will apply the lash, fail on whom it will. Perhaps iho Adniinis tration has committed a grave blun der in removing Henderson. That, removal excited suspicion which has only been allayed by the appointment of Mr. Broad head. J. All the Northern Methodist pul piteers who "give their views" on Haven's speech and the Boston Sun day School nomination ot Grant for a third term speak of the matter as "unwise policy" and a "grave blun der.." They see nothing highly in decorous, not to say sinful, in these preachers meddling with what tlwy have noihinff to do. ' . The Atlanta Constitution publishes a list of thirty-seven marriages under thei heading, "Cupid's cvclom." Now if the learned gelter-np of that caption had been a prophet would he not have- put; up ;t he$ jobXin some thing like this style: "Cupid's eye clo'en?" Unfortunately it turns out that way in too manv instances. 'lIMfcLY TOPICS. Readers with a morbid taste for statistics, a3 the Springfield (Mas.)
