The old "Mechanics Hotel," located on Front, between Orange, and Ann streets, called by some Seventy-Six," said by others to have been at one time the head quarters of Lord Cornwallis or some of his subordinates during " the days that tried men a souls,", and known by people gnn erally as being almost the only landmark of the olden times now remaining, having thus far .withstood the insidious innova tions of improvement and progress that have levelled and wiped out so many: of the old, dilapidated and wornout relics of a by-gone age, came near losing its identity and significance forever, in a vortex of smoke and embers, on Tuesday nieht. It appears that Mr. W. G. Fowler, the owner of tbe property, who resides nearly opposite the building in question, which has for some time past been untenanted, happening to be up about midnight and casting bis eye in that direction, discovered a light burning in the house. Hastily re pairing thither, be found one of the rooms occupied by the well-known colored indi vidual, usually designated as "Crazy Tenny," who, with a colored j com panion iwho ran ! and secreted himself upon Mr. Fowler's appioach, bad torn loose a lot ot boards, many of which were scat tered around, and started a rousing fire, which was rapidly communicating itself to the combustible material with which it was surrounded. Mr. F. states that if be had arrived twenty minutes later the bouse would have been in flames, and thus much valuable property in the vicinity would have been endangered. We are glad to learn, in this connection, that Mr.. Fowler designs tearing down ibis old building very shortly and erecting on the site thereof tome good and substantial frame buildings. As for old " Tenny," who so narrowly escaped causing what might have proven in the end a destructive confiagratioa, we thiuk it w ill occur to our authorities that he sliould be provided for in such a way as to guard against his indulging iu such danger ous practices in tbe future. He was con fined iu the building lor the insane at the County Poor House for some time, from which he seems to have been : lately re leased. . ' Since writing the above we learn that, upon complaint made by Mr. Fowler, 'Tenny" Mcllbenuy; by which name the party above mentioned is known, has' been arrested on a warrant issued by Justice Vau Amringe and will be sent to the county asylum at the Poor House to await an. opeuiug for bis admission at the State In sane Asylum at Kaleigh. superior Court. It appears that about 10 o'clock, while engaged in super intending a fire in a furnace in the yard, which had been made for the purpose of beating water for , washing purposes, ber dress suddenly became ignited, and; by the time she was made aware of the fact the flames bad attalued sQch headway that she could uot arrest them. With remarkable presence of mind she refrained from run ning, as most ladies would have done un der like circumstances, but cried out for assistance, while in the meantime she used what efforts she could to shield ; herself from, harm. Fortunately, her bister discov ered tbe situation, of affairs and quickly brought a bucket of water into requisition, which was thrown upon ner and the fire so nearly extinguished that tbe remnants of her outside dress could be easily removed, when the danger was over: ,' Had the young lady been seized with a panic and attempted to run, thus fanning the flames, the result might - have , been t much t more disastrous.
