Washington. 'Jan. 30, :?
The letter of Speaker Kerr,printe3
here this morniug in favor of Gov,:
Hendricks for President, creates a
good deal of comment, ami while alt
concede to Turn the right to settle for
himself his choice of a Presidential
candidate, there ; are j nevertheless
those who think be has gone out 'of
hid way to advocate the claims of any
candidate. Especially are the New
York Tilden Democrats, dissatisfied
with Mr. Kerr's letter.: They f say
! they supported Mr. Kerr for Speaker
! in goud faith, and that except for
j them he would not have been elected,
and they feel rather sore that he
should so 6oo n lake the occasion to
repav their services with a declara
tion intended to make: capital for a
candidate in opposition to Gov. Til-
leu. They are disposed to think that
it is not the. place for a Speaker of
the House to come out in an open
letter in favor of any candidate, and
that it would be more ; becoming in
him to wail for the Nominating Con
vention. .. . xJx ''. !' 1

- Considering the dismal .weather of last
night, the ladies of the First Baptist Church
had eyery reason to feel gratified at the
number and spirit of the friends and pa
trons who called, to see them and their
pretty wares and to indulge the pleasures
of taste under their skillful direction. The
tables on the first floor . were .loaded with
things good enough for Iking and served,
by maidens fair enough to charm the cool
cash right out of the pockets of even the
least susceptible, while on the second floor
were displayed specimens of ornamental
and decorative work' of the ladies' own'
contrivance and construction, mainly, some
of which was so very pretty that some en-'
thusiastic gentlemen when they beheld it
were moved to raise it even out of the clash
tification of ."fine art work and make for

of ':. "superfine arts.' The' Cornet Concet t
Club attended, and, supercharged by the
cantemplation of the scene Inside, would
now and then sally forth to pour out their
surplus of harmony on the evening air.
Altogether, everybody seemed -pleased-
the ladies by a generous patronage; the
patrons by the full return of their money's
worth with plenty of pleasant attentions
thrown in ; the concertists by the general
inspiration of the occasion and the con
sciousness of having tooted well; and,
some said they'd like to try it all oyer
