Henderson Northrop was arraigned be bre Justice YanAmringe, yesterday, charged with committing assault and bat tery on the person of Isaac Hellins. ' De fendant submitted and the case was dis missed oil the payment of costs. John Piver, arraigned on the charge of committing assault and battery on tbe per son of bis wife, was required to pay a fine of $5 and costs. The same party, arraigned on a peace warrant sworn out by his wife, was bound over to the Superior Court in the sum of $100. ? . Isaac Hellins, charged with committing an assault upon Henderson Northrop, had a hearing, tbe Justice decidingthe difficulty to be an affray in which both were equally guilty, and requiring the parties to pay the costs between them. J It is reported that a colored man, whose name his not been ascertained, fell over board off the wharf, at the foot of Market street, on Wednesday night, and was drowned. Coroner Hewlett heard the re port and endeavored to trace it out. i He found one colored man; (London Souther- land, our former, engineer,) who said he heard another colored man declare that he saw the man when he tumbled off the wharf, and that he was certainly drowned, but that he did not know who the man was. , Lon don told the Coroner that he knew his in formant when he saw him. but did not . i . know his name, though he would hunt him up- . : ' I Tbe Burled Clotblnff. " 7 ' - N. C., SATURDAY. LS? j, Baptist Church, of which Rev. F. R. How ell is pastor, were arraigned before Justice. T. M. Gardner, yesterday, on the complaint of Eli Carrie,! Chairman of the Board of Trustees of said church, charged with get ting possession of the keys and locking out the remainder of the congregation, and post lag on the front door the following notice: "No admittance within this church unless the Law will be inforced. Keep away I" It is furthermore charged, that while one of the members of the church was taking the communion service home,' .it , having been placed in his, charge, he. stopped at a certain house to get a drink of water, when one of the delendants obtained, possession of the service and refused to give.it up. It is also charged that: defendants are not really members of the church, they having been turned out Per contra, itiseems that defendants and those whom they represent claim that they constitute the church in question.' The case was called at the Court House yesterday afternoon, but the defen dants claimed a continuance, and, after hearing arguments pro and ' con, it was finally, decided to postpone the hearing of the case until this morning at 10 o'clock. . - The Bella. ; ' The fire engine bells. They sounded along Market street last night, shortly after 9 o'clock, and brought night-caps and anxious faces in plenty to the doors and windows, and not a few of the wide-awakes, iato the 8tieet;but, after a few moments of suspense, finding that the "brazen bell"' in the market tower did not join the clangor, everybody felt ni assured, and slunk away again to resume previous employments. As it is our business to know everything, we were less easily satisfied, and proceeded 40 investigate. - We found that the old How ard hand-engine had been brought to Mar ket dock for the purpose of trying a stream, and being turned over to the Brooklyn (colored) Company. The stream thrown was considered satisfactory, and the engine was finally hauled off to wake the echoes and dwellers in the North End. Hop. The social hop, of which we have here tofore spoken as set for last night, came off at Meginney's Hall as per announcement. The gentlemen having the affair in' charge were gratified with a fine turnout and a beautiful night; and as the company was a very pleasant one, everybody seemed in turn gratified with the management and pleased with every one else in general and with himself in particular. We have sel dom looked in on an assemblage where there seemed to be more genuine enjoy ment, lack of. affectation, and genial good nature. ' - . v . . - ; -.- v - ;- Iieetnre.
