into the Firfct Ward Democratic Club, by
electing W. M. Parker, unanimously, as
President, R. C. Orrell, Vice President,
W. II. Strauss, Secretary, and W. D.
Mahn, Treasurer.

committee for the ward, were appointed by

on the roof and in two minutes more,
being five minutes altogether, they, had
their largest ladder in position aud a hook
on the top of the belfry. The other ladders
were also quickly in position, and the way
they were handled and shifted about would
have done credit to firemen of much more
experience than this company has had the
opportunity of attaining, as the manage
ment of such a large truck and such ponder
ous ladders must of necessity require a
great deal of strength as well as skill and
ingenuity. i

Jeff. Hamilton,. the colored boy alluded
to in our last as having been arrested for
disorderly conduct near the corner of Mar
ket and Second streets, was arraigned be
fore the Mayor yesterday morning and
ordered to pay a flue of $20 and costs or
work for thirty days on the streets.,
The same defendant, arrested subse
quently for stealing two pairs of fine pants
from Mr. 'A. David's store on Market street,
an account of which we also published,
had a hearing and I was ordered to give a
justified bond in the sum of $1C0 for his
appearance at the next term of the Superior
Court. In default of payment of the fine
imposed in the first case the prisoner wil
be kept at work on the streets until his
term expires, when he will be turned over
j to the Sheriff to stand his trial for larceny.
Francis Holmes, charged with fast riding
on horseback through the public streets,
was ordered to pay a fine of $10 and costs,
or work for twenty days ou the streets.
Defendant appealed to the Supreme Court
and was required to give a justified bond in
the sum of $200 for his appearance.

The ladies of Raleigh and other portions
of the State have been interesting them
selves in getting up contributions for a
suitable banner to be displayed in -the
North Carolina Department of the Cen
tennial at Philadelphia. The banner is to
be framed with native black welnut, fin
ished with holly, and upon its folds will be
inscribed the coat of arms of the State,
&c., the battle-fields if Moore's Creek,
King's Mountain, and Guilford Court
house, the Mecklenburg Declaration and
the Hornet's Nest. About $40U, or two
thirds of the amount necessary, has been
subscribed by ladies in other portions of
the State, wbiie here, Charlotte and at
some other poiuts nothing has as yet been
accomplished in this direction. If a thing
is worth doing at all.it is worth doing
well ; and it is thought that it would be a
graceful thing if the ladies of the twin sis
ter cities of the East and West should con
tribute, or cause to be contributed, through
their efforts, the amount required to com
plete the beautiful banner, and send it on

good old State at the great exhibition.

cratic Conservative party of Pender coun
ty assembled iu convention at Burgaw on
Saturday, the 13th of May, 1876. Dr. S.
S. Satchwell, acting as Chairman of the
conuty executive committee, called the
convention to order. He hoped that the
new county, in the very outset of its career,
would erect a high standard of political
aption. What he wants in the campaigns

charged with the larceny of a quantity of
lace, a black silk veil, a gold tooth pick and
a diamond ring, of the value of $75, from
Mr. Samuel Bear, an account of which ap
peared in our paper a few days since. The
evidence was deemed conclusive as to her
guilt, and defendant was ordered to enter
into a justified bond in the sum of $150 for
her appearance at the next term of the su
perior Court, in default of which she was
lodged in jail. J
