Yesterday the Democratic Conser vative Convention of North Carolina assembled in Raleigh and got through nil of its work. Our telegrams tep r sjnt that the feeling of the body was tiH'Sl enthusiastic and that the utmost harmony prevailed through out. The fact that a large part of the ticket was nominated by accla mation t-liows that there was not as ercat a contest oer positions as pre- viously. v . The fulF"tieket is herewith pre sented: Governor Zebulon B. Vance, of Mecklenburg. Lieutenant Governor Thoirfas J. Jarvis, of Pitt. " j Attorney General Thomas S. Ke nan, of Wilson. Secretary of State Joseph A. En go hard, of NeW Hanover. Treasurer James M. AVortli, of Randolph. Auditor Samuel L. Love, of Ilay- WnOil. v SujieiinU'ink'nt of Tublic Instruc tion Jarnes C. B. Gilliam, of Granville. This ticket as a whole is very strong. It can be elected. It is a good ticket considering it in the lump, a very tine ticket. There are some powerful names on it. Vance alone is a host. He will give it an enthusiasm and ' a genuine momen tum which will probably carry the puty on to a glorious and complete triumph next November. Let the people rally to its support. With hard work the Conservatives can carry the State by ten or fifteen thou-Rand-majority. But without united, well-directed and persistent effort, even the strong ticket nominated yesterday will lower its colors and hite the dust. . ' - Even Pinchback kicks Grant. ' Three cheers for "Old Zeb !" South and east wiuds, station- ary temperature, cloudy and rainy weather, is the prediction, as a rarity, for this sec tion to day. There was a mistake in these columns yesterday concerning St. Paul's festival. The church has no indebtedness. The festival realized a good sum for the purpose for which it was held. Easterly winds and rain have generally prevailed in this section for sev eral days past, with a consequent dullness in the fish market, and increasing demacd for umbrellas. The intelligence of the nomina- tioli of Vance for Governor was received here yesterday with every evidence of en thusiasm. "Vance and victory J" is the slogan from now until November. Justice Wagner, of Masonboro township, whose horse was shot Mouday, says he would have refused $200 in gold for the animal, which was an exceedingly valuable one. From all the circumstances, Mr. Wfagner is satisfied that the killing was by no means an accident, but an inten tional and villainous act, the perpetrator of which may yet be brought to suffer for the base and cruel deed. Crand Lodge KnfKhta of Pythias. The Grand Lodge met yesterday morn ing, P. G. C. Blocker presiding. . A num ber of resolutions were presented and con sidered, and a considerable amount of oth er business transacted, after which the fol lowing Grand Officers were elected : G. C A. L. The night session was devoted to the ex emplification of theecTet work of the or der. The entertainment at the Wilmington Garden, yesterday afternoon.'complimenta ry to the Grand Lodge, was, we under stand, a grand affair. A splendid supper, under the auspices of Germania Lodge, No. 4, had been prepared for the occasion, and was hugely enjoyed by ye gallant knights, as also the refreshments provided. The Italian string band furnished the music. The Excursion To-morrow. ; To-morrow the grand excursion to Smithville and Bald Head, complimentary to the Grand Lodge Knights of Pythias, will take place. The steamer Governor Worth, which is to take the excursionists down, will leave Lemmerman & Coney's wharf at 7 A. M. Edwards & Hall, of this city, have at their place at Tar Landing, Ons low county, a black sow, a little, over one year old, which has for some time past been nursing a litter of pigs belonging to another sow. The reader will no doubt be ready to exclaim, "Well, what of that ! It is not so very singular that one sow should suckle the pigs of another." Yes, but you have not heard the whole of f the story, as told to us by Mr. Edwards himself, who vouches for its correctness, j He says the sow that is now nursing the pigs of an other never had any little ones of her own! She is represented as being very fat and lazy, and had' been in the habit of lying about the yard. The pigs first got to "nos ing around," finally taking the tits into their mouths and endeavoring to obtain the sustenance they had been in ; the habit of receiving from their mother, the result be ing that in a little while' the udders of the virgin sow commenced swelling, fol lowed by a copious supply of milk.- The pigs have now entirely deserted their mo ther and taken up with the stranger, to wards whom they manifest every evidence of "piggish" affection, and under whose care they appear to be as thriving and prosperous as pigs generally get to be, without showing the slightest sympathy for their parent in her deserted and forlorn condition. A memorial Tablet. We stepped in at the store of Messrs. Adrian & Vollers, yesterday, when our attention was called to a marble slab, lust received, which is to be erected over the remains of Daniel Ro well, a worthy colored man of Brunswick county, who died in the early part of the present year. His con duct and disposition had always been such as to endear him to his white friends, espe cially of ;the Democratic Conservative party, with which he continued to act up to the time of his death. Not to this fact alone, however, wc are informed, is due this ; spontaneous action on the part of his white friends, but to the honesty and integrity which had al ways marked his dealings with his fellow men, and which secured for : him the re spect aud esteem of all who knew him, both white and colored. ! r The inscription on tike monument is as follows: DANIEL UOWELLj Died Febiuary 19th, 1870, aged GO years and 9 days. . A devoted husband, an affectionate parent, a leading member of the' Baptist Church, a good neighbor, and an excellent citizen. In politics as rare as a black swan. ' This memorial tablet is erected by his Democratic friends. The tablet, as we have heretofore slated, is to be erected over the remains of di ce ased on the approaching Fourth of July, with appropriate ceremonies. JPrliicelou. . . James M. As the match progresses the interest in it increases, several new members having lately connected themselves with the Club. The members of the rival teams are also paying more attention to practice and are manifesting a disposition to excel, which, if persevered in, will eventually place our Rifle Club in the front rank of American marksmen. ' A Tin Wedding. ' . "- Tuesday being the tenth anniversary of the wedding of Mr. S. G. Hall, the Wil mington Concert Club, of which he is a member, tendered him a complimentary serenade at his .residence, corner of Mul berry and MacRae streets, during the even ing, presenting him also with quite a varie ty of articles of tin-ware. At the conclu sion of the ceremonies attendant upon the happy occasion, the band was agreeably entertained by Mr. Hall. For the Star. Wilmington, N. C, June 14, 1870. Editor Star Your correspondent at Smithville, in an article of two days ago, saw fit to do Captain Rosafy what seems to be an intentional injustice. Mrs. Rosafy was postmaster at Smithville, and, after holding the office for the past two years, to the entire satisfaction of the Department and the patrons of the office, she volunta rily resigued. j Your correspondent, for some cause, put his Legg into this matter so far that his object is unmistakable. - Fact city irens.
