Xait.Piiiht.i.::.j::,:5;::f'H. V:-:4:-The
regular meeting of. the Second Ward
Tilden and Vance Club was held last night.
After the meeting had come to order and
the usual routine of business had been
transacted, vol. J.l G. Burr was called upon
ana responded in, his usual happy style.
Ills speech was replete with pure rhetoric
and sound, logical argument, and was re
ceived with ! much applause. After he had
continued his remarks for about fifteen
minutes, the Colonel stated that as he
noticed Majj. J. A. Engelhard was present
in. the meeting, he j would desist from any
further remarks in j order that " we might
all enjoy a speech from pur worthy candi
date for Secretary of State." I !
Jjoud calls were then made for if Engel
hard," whoi in coming forward to respond,
was greeted with rapturous applause. He'
spoke at considerable length, duiing which
ne slated that in the sixteen or eighteen
Eastern counties, he bad visited, together
with two or three of the middle counties,
he was convinced that there would be an
increase f at least . four thousand votes
over that given for Merrimon. At every
place where he spoke the people turned out
almost en masse to hear him, old and
young, white and black. A great many of
the older men in his audiences, who said
they had not voted at any election since
the wvar, informed him that they should
certainly ' vote in the coming election,
if their lives were spared, for Tilden, Vance
aud Reform. . And it is thus, said the
Major, that we shall make our principal
gains in the approachiug election. ! His re
marks throughout were full of encourage
ment and were received with . great ap
plause. ' .'.;!''- i .... !!

A correspondent, writing from Smith-

The past week has been one of excite
ment for our town.' Besides Court, Hon.
day night the Democratic Convention met
in the Court House ; and nominated the
County officers. . Tuesday night Hon; A.
M. Waddell addressed the people in a very
business-like manner, dealing only in facts
and figures. The house was crewtied.
Wednesday night the Tilden-Vance Club
was addressed by Mr. John D. Bellamy.
Thursday night there was speaking by
Judge Watts ("Greasy Sam," so-called) and
Cdk Oliver H. Dockery. Judgei . Watts
addressed the people 'in his peculiar style,
keeping their mouths well stretched with
laughter. Col. Dockery's speech was a
truly political one. Great enthusiasm is
manifested by both parties in this place.
It was ordered by the Board of County
Commissioners, at their last meeting, that
the voting precinct, at J. J. Gay's store be
discontinued, and that a new one be estab
lished in the town of .Summerville, in the
grove between the church and the main
road, and that the clerk be required to post
notices thirty days previous to the day of
election. . J m
It was also ordered that the people of
Waccamaw township be specially request
ed, at the general election in November, to
vote for a site for a bridge across Wacca
maw river. " i i -
The Board adjourned to meet on the

This'! gcnt'.emaa, Democratic candidate
for Secretary of State, has been in the city
foEa j few days resting from his labors in
the campaign. He will go on his western
canvass in a day or two. m
Muj. Engelhard is confident that the
State ticket will gain four thousand, votes
east of the Wilmington & Weldon Rail-
ad. He is likewise sanguine as to the
general result He will make a special tour
of the northwestern counties,! which have
never in any campaign received the atten
tion bestowed upon other portions of the
State, owing to the fact that there are no
railroad i facilities in that section. From
accounts sent to us 'and from newspaper
reports, ! we judge Maj. Engelhard has
been making an earnest and effective can

will be able probably to stand even in
creased labors i in the salubrious region to
