Love; baa been ap pointed Chairman pro tem. of the Demo cratic County Executive Committee during tbe absence of Mr. G. H. Robinson. A false alarm of fire was start ed last night, about U o'clock, bringing the engines out, aud creating considerable ex citement ou the streets. Northeast to northweht winds, stationary or lower temper i ture and partly cloudy or clear weather, are tbe predictions for this section to day. The City Clerk and Treasurer gives notice tbat the advertising of proper ty for unpaid city taxes, for 1875, is post poned for two weeks, by direction of the Finance Committee. Some of the merchants and dealers oa tbe hill are anxious that (be old practice of firing a gun upon the arrival of a New York or Baltimore steamer should again become in vogue. Mr. Jos. M. Cro'nly has been added to The Morkisg Star family, and will begin work next week as travelling agent and correspondent. His first tour will be ou the line of tbe Carolina Central Railway, and we commendhim to the good offices of our friends in that quarter. Tbe Tobacco Culture. I through the courtesy; of Mr. Henry Nun,- of this city, we examined yesterday some samples of fine manufactured tobac co, raised in Buncombe county, and in tended to be presented to Mr. Jacob Loeb, French Vice Consul at this port, to be for warded to France. One of ; these ppcciiueas is that from which Ashevil)es best smoking tobacco is made, considered superior tp any manufactured in this country. Its color is of a light yellow, and its main characteristic is the fineness of its texture or fibres, coupled with -strength and firm ness. The other specimens are such as are used to manufacture into chewing tobacco, one of which, believed td be particularly adapted to the wants of the French people, is of a dark brown color, aud is noted alike for . the fineness of its texture . and its strength and heaviness. As products of the soil of our own State,- and presenting so many evidences of superiority, these specimens are naturally calculated to at tract attention. ( j " Referring to tobacco raised in tbe stction alluded to, the Dauviilc Times of a late date says: 1 " Capt. W. P. Graves has just returned from a visit to the counties of Buncombe and Madison. These are two counties ly ing tbe other side of tbe Blue Ridge, which have gone into the cultivation Of tobacco within tbe last few years.. 1 And by the way, in the counties above named, the soil is pre-eminently adapted to tbe cultiva tion of tbat article, and we shall doubtless see more of it every year in our market." Tbe time is not far distant when tobacco raised in North Carolina, where the soil is so well adapted to its successful and profit able culture, will be considered superior to any in tbe markets of tbe world, and tbe one thing needful is tbe proper railroad connections with the great tobacco -growing sections of the west to make Wilmington, the only important sea-port city of the State, tbe outlet for what will in time become one of her most important staples, instead of having to let- ft go into the hands of Virginia speculators, whereby North Carolina loses all Credit for its production and much of the profit de rived from its growth and manufacture We hope to see the day when North Caro lina shall become more thoroughly aroused to her own interests, and be led to appreci ate more her own great advantages and op portunities. Yellow Paver Uellef fuud. We acknowledge the receipt, since our last issue, for tbe yellow lever sufferers at Brunswick, Ga., of $100 from Messrs. E. Kidder & Sons, $1 00 from John D. Doa cher, aud $2 00 from "P.'P." Yesterday $180 00 was forwarded from the office of The Morning Star to Bruns wick and $10 to Savannah, being contribu tions left with us for the Benefit of tbe suf ferers. m' m mt ' A cuttlu- Case. A fight between two small colored boys took place at tbe base ball grounds, corner of Sixth and Orange streets, yesterday af ternoon, during which one by the name of Charles King cut another IB tbe bade, with a knife, inflicting a aevere woaad. We learn tbat tbe parties will be arretted. WILMINGTON, N, 5? Supuloii of ibe Dallr Journal. The following announcement of the sus pension of the Daily Journal of this city was issued from the office of tbat paper yesterday morning: TO THE PATRONS OF THE JOURNAL.. It is with tbe greatest reluctance and re gret that the Stockholders of tbe Wilming ton Journal Publishing Company have to annonnce that the Daily Journal has beeu suspended for the present. I The result is solely attributable to the financial distress under which the whole country is suffering, and not to the want of any ability or energy in its editorial con duct. Tbe Editor, Col. Saunders, through a long period of trouble and anxiety, has stood at his post with an unselfish fidelity and ability which-would have accomplish ed anything hut tbe impossible. But no man can publish a daily paper without means, and we can no longer ask him to continue to make the effort to do it. Tbe Weekly Journal will be published regularly during ibe campaign. A. tt.
