The Senate was called to order at 11 o'clock, President Robinson in the chair. Pi'ayer was rffered by Rev. Dr. Pritcbard, of the city. The journal was read and ap proved. Standing-committees made reports. BILLS. By Senator Graham: An act to pre scribe what bonds shall be given by the sheriffs of the State. It provides that a sheriff shall give bond for the three several divisions of the tax list which is placed iu his hands, the bonds in each case to be double the amount of tax to be col lected It was referred to Judiciary com mutee. Upon motion of Senator Stanford, the bill regarding the swamps of Ons low county was referred and ordered to he printed. Upon motion of Senator Liles, the niles-weie suspended and the Senate took up his bill to amend an act in regard to a change of ibe gauge ot railroads. A substitute was reported from the committee recommending that the gauge of the Cheraw & Yad kin Railroad, to which the bill re ferred, be allowed to be built of the desired gauge, the gatiire, however, to be subject to the o.tr l f the General Assembly to haw it changed whenever it became necessary to have it conform to the gauge of other railroads iu the Stale, and further, Jftatthe company be required -to complete the road to Wadesboro within three years. ., i The substitute, a explained, was put upon its passage and passed its several readings ayes 30, nays 2. By Mr. Puruell: A bill to autho rize cities of 5,000 inhabitants and upwards to levy a tax for the sup port of graded schools therein. Com mittee on Education. By Mr. McRae: A resolution in re ference to the internal revenue of the United Slates. Placed on the Calen dar. Under suspension of the rules the resolution to adjourn came up and passed its third reading. The bill to prevent the burning of dwelling and other houses was taken up, and, ou motion of Mr. Vaughn, made the special order for Thursday at 12 M. The resolution asking our Con gressmen to use their influence to procure such amendment to the iaw iu relation to currency as to restrain National Banks from taking more than 8 per cent, interest, was taken up and passed us second reading. Under a suspension of the rules the resolution came up on its third read ing aud passed. The resolution requiring the State Geologist to furnish the House with an itemized statement of expendi tures, was taken up. Mr Singeltary moved to refer the resolution to the committee on Agri culture, Mining, &o. Lost. The resolution was adopted. A re markable fact in this connection, worthy of note, which speaks vol umes as to ibe health of North Caro lina, is, that not one of the ministers connected with the Conference has died during the past year. , Rev. W. D. Taylor, of the M. E. Church, connected himself with, and was recognized as an Elder in the M. E. Church South. North Carolina Conference. James H. Tart, recently a minister in the Baptist Church, connected himself with, aud was recognized as an Elder in the M. E. Church bouth, North Carolina Conference. Messrs. Isham Cox, Allen Jay and David Tatum, members of the So ciety of Friends, were introduced as fraternal messengers from that church, when the Rev. Mr. Cox pro ceeded to address the Conference in a few well timed remarks relative to his mission. Dr. J. B. McFerrin, Missionary Secretary of the M. E. Church bouth, was introdnced and invited to a seat in the Conference. Dr. B. Craven introduced ihe fol lowing resolution : Resolved. That we most gratefully receive Isham Cox and Allen Jay as fraternal messengers from the socie ty of Friends;we shall be glad to cultivate fraternal relations of love and amity with the Friends; which was adopted unanimously. Bishop Kavanaugh submitted few remarks relative lo the fraternity and unity of the Christian churches. Dr. Craven moved that a commit tee of two be appointed from this body as fraternal messengers to at tend the next yearly meeting of the Friends. The following ministers passed ex amination of character and were con tinued on second years studies: Revs. J. M. Rhodes, T. U. Hall aud U Whittineton. Rev. J. B. Cumberland sent up five convicts to the Penitentiary last Week. Judge Purches presided. The Charlotte Observer says that when James Conner, of Charleston, has got through with our Judge Settle in the habeas corpus case at ColumtMa, b. Partly cloudy or clear weather, northeast to northwest winds, rising ba rometer aud slight changes in temperature, are the probabilities for this section to day. We learn that a colored min- stiel troupe is being organized for the pur- uose of Eivintr entertainments on the C7 ground during the progress of the colored Industrial Pair, which comes .off here the latter part of this mouth. . We learn that there will be an investigation this moiuinginto the alleged assault upon Mr. Noma, of Philadelphia, by a policeman at the station-house, Satur day night, mention 'of which was made in Sunday's paper. A meeting of the Wilmington Historical and Scientific Society was held last night, at the school house in the rear of St. James' Church. We propose in our next to give some account of the proceed ings. Since the suspension of tbe Daily Sentinel, of Raleigh, tbe Morning Star is the oldest daily newspaper in North Carolina. It is also the largest daily in the State, has the largest circulation, and bets tbe largest "pile" that Mr. Til- den will take his seat as President. A Financial miaunderstandluK. Mrs. Annie J. A fiire broke out Sunday, about 1p.m., in tbe Photographic Art Gallery of Mr. C. M. YanOrsdell, on tbe south side of Mar ket, between Front and Second streets. The flimes were discovered in one of the windows, in which was located tbe solar. camera belonging to the gallery, whicb, with other instruments, stock, etc., was de stroyed. The wood work about the win dow was burnt, and the flames, when dis covered, were rapidly communicating to the ceiling. The most of the damage to tbe buildiug, however, which was slight, occurred in the effort to discover if there was any fire behind the ceiling, from which smoke was seen to issue. The engines were promptly on the spot, but luckily their services were not needed, the fire having been extinguished by the "use of buckets. Mr. YanOrsdell estimates his loss iu in struments and stock destroyed, at about $527, upon which there was insurance, iu a company represented by Messrs. Atkinson & Manning, of from $300 to $325. The damage to t'ae building was covered by in surance in a company represented by Mr. N. Giles. The fire is supposed to have originated from sparks from some chimney iu the vicinity, or from some other unknown cause. meeting of the Board of County Com missioner. The Board met yesterday, at 11 o'clock, in regular monthly session; present, J. G. Wagner, Chairman, and Commissioners D. C. Davis, S. Van Amringe, D. Holmes a nd D. Nixon. The miDUtes of tbe last meeting were read and approved. The Auditor's report for November was approved and ordered spread upon the minutes. The report of Elijah Hewlett, County Treasurer, for the mouth of November, was presented, approved and ordered on file. The Board then adjourned sine die. THE NEW BOARD. At 13 o'clock M. the following ne wly elected members came forward and were sworn in office by Justice T. M. Gardner: J. G. Wagner, Stacy YanAmringe, Duncan Holmes and Delavan Nixon. John G. Wagner was elected Chairman pro tern. It being now in order to elect a perma nent Chairman, Commissioner YanAm ringe put in nomination J. G. Wagner. A ballot was then taken, when it was found tbat Commissioner Wagner had re ceived three votes and Commissioner Van Amringe one, Wagner voting for YanAm ringe; whereupon John G. Wagner was de clared duly elected Chairman. The Board then took a recess until this morning at 10 o'clock, when they will be ready to act on official bouds. Ladled' Benevolent Society. We are requested by the President and officers to state that the annual meeting of this Association is appointed for Thursday next, the 7th inst., at 11 o'clock, in the lec ture room of the First Presbyterian Church, on Orange street. All ladies interested in the necessities of the poor arc earnestly re quested to attend and unite in relieving suffering humanity. An address is promised from one of our public speakers, whicb will, give interest to tbe occasion. The au nual subscription is so small we think not lets than .three or four hundred of our ladies should be enrolled as regular con tributors. Surely all cau save and con tribute $1 annualiy, or two cents a week, for such a cause as this. Should stormy or inclement weather pre vail on the day appointed for the meeting, it will be held on the next fair day. It is to be hoped that there will be a large at tendance on the occasion. This makes things free and easy for the boys, and we can assure tbe railroad officials that their liberality and kindness is duly appreciated. Sprung a Mine. A Mr. Peterson, living in Bladen county, while engaged in digging around an old stump for tbe purpose of removing it, a few days ago, found $3 40 cents in Spanish coin. Of course after tbis he continued digging and succeeded altogether in un earthing $33 65, all Spanish coin save one American dollar gold piece. The Spanish coin bore the following inscription: "Caro- Ins IV, 179(1.'! Mr. Peterson having been so successful, we expect to bear of others taking the stump" on tbe "hard money" platform.
