Tnc Lottery nan Gone and I.eft ITo Some of tne circumstances Attena Ine Uls Exit. An individual by the name of W. H. Harrison, familiarly known as Walter Har- rispn, who has been a resident of this city for several years past, where he has been engaged in the lottery business, gambling, running drinking saloons, restaurants, &c. , left here rather suddenly about a week ago, and it has since transpired that he carried away with him a considerable amount of money and valuables belonging to other people. He has lately been talking of get- tiner ur another lottery scheme under the I old charter, granted by the Legislature to what was known as the North Carolina Beneficial Association, by which, he repre sented, a hundred thousand dollars or more could be realized in a very short time. He endeavofed to get the Mayor of the city to invest five or six thousand dollars in the enteroiise. and approached the Sheriff i of the couDty in like manner, but these LUe two officials concluded, as there was 1 such a very large amount to be realized on J the scheme, they would let Walter make tne fugitive was discovered in a neighbor it. ! He succeeded, however, in gulling iDg, field by a colored man bv the name of some of our less suspecting merchants to Darid Cox, said to be aelative of Parker, a 'considerable amount in this way, one J firm, we understand, being his creditors to I the tune of ibout $2,500. Before taking Wk rlenarturc he also managed to supply I his wardrooe to quite a heavy extent, hav- ing the articles charged to his account, and I stating that he would pay for them m a day or two. He also carried away with him a tot of jewelry which had been placed in 'his hands to be disposed of in his pro-1 nosed lottery. He had his homestead laid off a short time since, and before leaving he disposed of that to a party here, who is in possession of the bill of sale and tbk necessary papers.
