orning mar. - -Bring Up a Worn Farm. Raleigh News. Prof. Kedzie, of the Michigan Agri culture College, in an able address delivered before the Michigan Farm ers' Institute, lately held, concludes as follows: , , . I believe the easiest and cheapest wtiv to hriner ud a worn-down farm IS bv erreen manuring. Suppose your farm is too poor for clover ana grass makes only a feeble growth, put 6n it a manural crop that will grow, such as rve Turn this under with your plow, and you can then raise something better. Keep feeding your soil with everything your shovel and your team can command ashes leached ashes, if you can get them by drawing them within five miles muck, marl, any thing that will bring a green mantle over your fields. Soon you can set the clover-pumps at work, pumping up to the inexhaustible resources of your subsoil. If an animal dies, don't stop to be wail your luck and exclaim: "Every thing goes to the dogs on my farm. Don't send it to the dogs at all, but compost it with muck, or even soil, and thus secure a most valuable ma nure. Samson performed a wonder bv taking honey from the dead car cass of a lion. You can out-do that wonder by extracting wheat from tne dead cow. Pick up aJ 1 tho hrmos VOU lean find, put them un der cover, "and mix with them two or tliNw times their bulk of ashes from kitchen: moisten them with rh water so that the potash may act on the gelatine of the bones; stir fiem over once a week, and in a month or two vou will find the bone so tender that you can cut and crush with a blow from your shovel. Beat the whole into a powdery mass, and you will have a manure better than t.v snner-nhostihates which you feel too poor to buy. Give a handful of this to each hill of corn, and see how it. will wave its banner of erreen. and iinivr into vour basket of erolden ears. But, in bringing your soil into good condition, do not neglect green ma nuring. Let every wind that blows over your fields bring them a blessing in the shape of atmospheric plant- food. Do all these patiently and nope- f ully, without urging your soil beyond what it can do. and you will yet, out of the fullness of a grateful heart, ex claim, "Bless God for the farm. Charlotte Observer. An Incident in Sheep Raining. An instance of the great advantage and actual profit of using improved stock in this county, was given yes terday. Col. Thomas, of the Carolina Military Institute, has five of the best breed of Merino sheep, and two of .the common stoek, all of which are kept and fed together. They were all clipped yesterday, and the wool weighed and sold. The yield from the two of the common stock was four uounds. while that from the five Me rino sheep was thirtv-one pounds, the largest yield from any one being twelve pounds. The Merino wool was sold in this market for about fifty cents nearly three times as much as the other brings and would have brought a much better price were any Quantity of it sold in this market, it is generally conceded that the raising of the ordinarv sheep pavs wen in this country, and if this be the case, could not the raising of Merino sheep be made a handsomely paying busi ness. Thev thrive well in this cli- uiat. and rwinire very little, if any more attention than the ordinary sheep. "Let Justice Be Done," Wilson Express. oine of our Democratic newspapers seem very unnecessarily, in our opin ion, diaposed to raise an issue amongst themselves concerning the measure of approval which shall be given to the official conduct of President Hayes when he chances to do right. It seems to us to be very clear that in approving the action of the present national administration in South Car olina and Louisiana affairs, it by no means fbllows as a logical sequence, as some people apparently imagine, that we are thus directly or indirectly asserting Mr. Hayes to be either a good man. or a thoroughly sound man in politics. We mean simply that in certain particulars mentioned he has done right. If we treat Mr WnvPRwith the same iustice to which nv other man is entitled we do not thereby propose to sell out to him or ever to forget the fraud by which he became de facto President, or any thine of the kind, nor does it mean that we desire these infamous frauds ..of Radicalism to be forgotten. Darkey'. Opinion of Matrimony A little knot of four or five darkies atood on Fayetteville street, yester- din v mominer.eneafired in conversation "I say, boys," queried one who stood wirfli his hands under his coat tail, "Did inny oh yer see de piece in de paper 'bout de two niggers in town H'nder davdac wus wantin' ob a re- vorce?" Thev all said they had. "Well," said the spokesman, "dat wareumstance is wot 'casions me tejr av dot marrvin' ain't wot it is" cract ud ter ba. I'se a marled man myself, I is. I'm iined to a young leddy wot T tho'fc at fust was erwine ter be mighty smart and do 'bout might'ly, and he'n me keen de wolf fum de do', so ter BDeak: but soon'g she got mar'ied she iea' flop down on her pinback an' wont hit a lick o' work, and bress fiod she done ruint me a thousan' dollars wof a'ready. Dat's wot make me say I done changed my 'pinyun on der curnubial question." The curtain falls on a thoughtful audience. mm m m Who Can Explain? Piedmont Press. Rather a singular occurrence at tracted the attention of a number gentlemen at Mr. D. A. Little's mill, seven miles from this place this week. It was a kind of eruption in the wa ters of the mill-dam. The water began to show siens of trouble by emitting- in rapid succession thousands of small bubbles in every section of the pond, which was followed by an up-heaving nf the water for about yoieet square, raising the surface of the pond in that : space about four leez aoove us usuai height. It boiled up with considera ble foree, many times large fleeks of Wu4 were thrown up from the bottom of the pond. This continued for :&bQut:8f minutes and then gradually quieted down. About five years ago a similar occurrence was noticed in the same yteiuity. A meadow which had been perfectly dry for some weeks was, in a few minutes time,' covered with water to tbe depth of eight inches, all came up out of the ground. Goldsboro Messenger', The seo rion of country north and east ef Golds boro, embracing the Nahunta section, was visited on the evening of the 9th with a co pious shower of snowy hail. It was soft, and therefore did but little damage. The weather has been excessively cold the past week.
