". .a . Mr. Muir, of Savannah, seconded the motion, which was carried unani mously. A committee was appointed, "to further the objects proposed. Mr. Phelps, of St. Louis, moved the substitution. of the term "American cotton" for the substitution of the term " Orleans-" which is at present used in quotations, on the ground that the latter was vague. Mr. Frost, of Charleston-, seconded the motion, but it was rejected by a vote of 11 to 9. ' 1 On motion of Mr. Reynolds, of Norfolk, Va., the Convention agreed !to recommend that cotton be sold at Liverpool at net cash without deduc tion as at present. Danbury Reporter: 'It is-reported that a drunken melee occurred at a place called Egypt, in this county, about six miles from Walnut Cove, last. Sunday, in which knives and pistola were conspicuous, and several of the parties engaged were wound ed. - The Irish potato crop in this sec tion is said to be almost a . failure, on ac count of dry weather. ' The huckle berry crop on tbe Sauratown mountain is said to be light, and the crop of rattlesnakes up to this time is reported to be almost a failure. -t Mrs. Kuthy Steele, widow of the late Andrew Steele, died Saturday in the 86th year of her age. She was very highly respected by all who knew her. Charlotte Observer1 : ' Richard M. Allison, Esq., of SUtesville, received a letter a day or two ago, informing him that his son, Thomas, a youth of 22 or 23 years of age, killed a man at Union Station, Tenn., on Friday of last week. He is now in jail. Alorc than twice as much to bacco has been planted in Iredell county this year than ever before. There.are four tobacco factories in operation in States ville, and one a few miles outside of cor porate limits. A plan is on foot for tbe erection of another warehouse in -the fall A very large premium sale of tobacco took place at Statesville yesterday, and wsa largely attended. " t " balanced that a very slight effort will cause it to oscillate, but the strength of us all could not move it from its position. . - Charlotte Democrat: The citi zens of Charlotte and Mecklenburg county have $360,000 invested in railroads in the way of corporation subscriptions, add about $200,000 of irulividualsub$criptions--xa&xig nearly seven hundred thousand dollars in vested in railroads by the citizens of Char lotte and Mecklenburg county. Many of the farmers of this section are now using steam threshers. About twelve have been sold by dealers in this city during the pre sent year. The grain comes out at the rate of about sixty bushels per hour. Chief Justice Pearson and Associate Justice By num, of the Supreme Court, are reported as prevented from attending to their duties by sickness. We hope the decision in the cases of "conflict of jurisdiction"; will not be made in their absence. Let every one of our Supreme Court Judges "show his hand" on that subject Wilson Advance: - It is con ceded by many of the new magistrates that the old county court system is unne cessary, and they will not vote for the es tablishment of inferior courts in this coun ty. Wilson has at last been furnished a respectable warehouse.' The. old shanty which has so long been an eye-sore and disgrace, has disappeared, and in its stead theRailroad Company have erected a brick building that is a credit to the read and an ornament to the town. There will be a pic nic at Solitaire, near Battleboro,' on the 20th. It has been observed that the lady with a diamond ring will scratch her nose, in a given period, four times as often as any other woman. ' Battle boro correspondent: The wheat crops . in this and adjoining sections are coming in satisfactorily. Col. Walter Ford, of the Whitaker's mill section, is shipping large quantities of pine lumber to North ern markets.' The chicken cholera is playing havoc with the fowls in this sec tion. - ' J . ; ' . Several intelligent Ger mans from Hew xork have been spending some time here prospecting wita a view of investing and locating. The flax har vest begins this week. There is a larger crop man usual in una county and it is generally looking well. - - The commis sioners of Chowan have ordered an election on the first Thursday , in August on the. question 01 voting $40,000 subscription to tne Suffolk and. Edenton Railroad. Two colored men confined in jail at Eden- ton escapea on the night or the 4th. Elizabeth City Economist : We are pleased to learn that some visitors from western norm uaronna contemplate a visit to Nag's Head during the present' season. Mosquitoes abound at Oregon Ihlet; the oldest inhab. knoweth not the' like: no rest, no rest, by night or by day. We learn from reliable sources that: the prospect of the Edenton and Suffolk Railroad is very good. 7 The new in struments for the Cornet Band are ordered, and will put in an appearance in a day or two. - Let the President stand firm in the right. We may possibly be mistaken, but it's our private opinion publicly expressed that Elizabeth City has turned the tide and things are looking up. All we need is greater facili ties of transportation. The ladies of Cresswell, Washington county, had a Tab leaux exhibition, on tbe nights 01 July 4th and 5th, to obtain funds for erecting, in that place, a Missionary Baptist Uhurcb. It was a pecuniary success. 7 Dr. Henry Lewis, of Plymouth, delivered an excellent address in Cresswell, on the 4th, by invita tion of the LO. O. F., before a large audi ence of ladies and gentlemen. One of Repair.' j The bridge over Green's mill pond creek, just beyond the National Cemetery, is rep resented .to be in a very bad condition, it being considered exceedingly dangerous to attempt to pass over it, especially at night. The planks are loose, and horses and vehi cles are liable to be precipitated into the creek. The proper authorities should see that it is put in good condition at once. Almost a Fire; j On Friday afternoon the Stokley house, at Piney Point Wrightsville Sound, had a narrow escape, from destruction by fire. Some person in the rear of the house dis covered smoke issuing from beneath it, and upon .examination it was discovered that the flooring was in names in the front part of the building near the steps, having pro bably been caused by a lighted cigar, .or in some other accidental manner. By the prompt .application of water the &re was quickly extinguished. Contradieted. The Raleigh Observer has the following; "The Wilmington Star published a short time ago a rumor of the death of Mr. John Ghost Elliot, and I saw the notice copied in the Observer. I set about making inquiries in the matter and the report was confirmed then I sat down and wrote quite a respec table obituary notice of this gentleman for the columns of your paper, and was on tbe point of mailing it Then I was informed that he hadn't died at all, and didn't intend to just now. Then I took that obituary notice and put it in a pigeon hole for future consideration." I Puiloc Awsf. - Statistics will prove, that there is not a healthier place of the same size in the coun try than our own city, and yet in the past six months there has been a much larger per centage of deaths among the male sex over fifty years of age than we have known for years. Death is making fearful inroads upon the older members of the community, as first one and then another is summoned away. We can call to mind at least eight of our aged male citizens who have been called to another sphere of existence during the past twelve months, and these among the best and most valued in the community. - There were four interments in Oakdale Cemetery during the week closing yesterday, the ages of tbe parties being, re spectively, 3 years, 12 years, 56 years and 72 years, and the diseases dropsy, jaundice, dysentery and iuternjittent feyer, ' Hi U. f ' I.oeal Dots. . . 1 ; " ! H- The health officers are carrying on a vigorous war against filth and unclean linessof all kinds, and we expect soon to oc the city in a first rate sanitary condition. The publio should bear in mind that the Young Catholic Friends' Society will have a grand family excursion on the steamer Chvemor WorUl on Tuesday, the - Rev. F. R. T. Willis, about seven miles from Shoe Heel. There were ten of them, all of which grew upon one stem. We are glad to learn that the prospects so far for the grand family and military excursion on the steamer Wacca- matoon Wednesday next are very encour aging, judging by the sale of tickets. ' It is how understood that the Cornet Concert Club will accompany the excursionists. On several occasions it has been noticed that while the services were being ! conducted at the grave they were disturbed by drivers changing the position of their vehicles, and it has been suggested that on all such occasions the proprietors of livery' stables and owners of carriages and other vehicles should instruet the drivers thereof, that, upon arriving at the grave.tbeir teams should under no circumstances be ;.moyeL ntil all the exercises are over. - The Wilmington and Coast Turnpike Company. ' , In pursuance of the notices published in the daily papers of the city, a meeting of the old original stockholders of "The Wil-, mington and Coast Turnpike Company" was held yesterday at the Bank of New Hanover. i On motion, Mr. Jas. H. Chadbourn was appointed. Chairman, and Mr. S. Jewel ! requested to act as Secretary. Mr. Wright stated to tbe. meeting that tinder certain judgments against the com pany the franchise of the company, togeth er with the road, the toll-house, and all the real and personal property- belonging to the. company, or to the main stem of the: road of the company, had been sold by the sheriff, and the same had been purchased With the view of reorganizing the compa ny and completing the turnpike road in a permanent manner; that after a careful es timate he was satisfied that $6,500 would be sufficient to pay the amounts due on the. judgments under which the property was sold, and also to complete the turnpike road: that the eanital stock of the comDanv bein limUed to the sum mentioned, it was I very certain that a liberal dividend would J De pa to the stockholders under the new j organization, and that as the old or original Bwcanoiuers naa iosi meir enure in vea.- menta as such stockholders, it was but right and equitable that they should have the preference in the subscriptions to the new stock. The following resolution was therefore unanimously adopted: Resolved. That under the contemplated I reorganization of the Wilmington and Coast Turnpike Company, the capital stock shall, in no event, exceed $6,500, and that books for subscription to the same be forth-.; with opened at the omce 01 the Secretary and Treasurer of the company, and kept open for twenty days. s, it being expressly understood that the original or old stock holders shall be entitled to a pro rata pre ference, if upon tbe closing of said books an excess upon the said capital stock ; shall have been subscribed.
