Carried. AFTERNOON SESSION. ' ' - Rev. J. P. Moore moved that W. H. Cunninggim, the appellant in the case of appeal from Neuse Circuit, be furnished with a copy of the proceed ings. Carried. i Rev. R. A. Willis made a similar motion for F. B. Andrews, in the Case appealed from the Littleton Cir cuit, which waa-granted. Rev. Joseph Wheeler, offered a resolution fixing the first Friday iu April and October, as days for fast ing and prayer by the members of the M. E. Church, North Carolina Conference, which was adopted. i Rev. C. H. Phillips, a resolution asking the General Conference to change the Discipline so as to require of each preacher to report the whole number of accessions. Adopted. i Rev. J. A. Cunninggim, for com mittee of Joint Board of Finance, submitted a report, showing amount assessed, amount paid and balance due for Bishops . and other fnnds. The , report shows that only 72 per cent, of the amount was collected. The report was adopted. ; u :The several amounts due claimants was read, out and the amounts handed 16 the pastors; this amount thus paid out was $4,099 60. The committee of Board of Finance offered a resolu tion, asking the General Conference to make a change in the law relating, to claimants, requiring a travelling ministerial life of five years before he or family can become a claimant. RETORT OF THE GRAND JURY: ' The. Grand I Jury., inspected the Poor House and found It in fair condition, with a general appearance of cleanliness, and a sufficient amount of fuel, clothing, nospital stores and ' provisions on hand, together with some sour flour and cracsers, said to be for hoes, i i : i -t !- . -p-... Examined and questioned the inmates, some 44 in number, and found them gene rally satisfied, i i We would suggest the heating of the in sane quarters by pipes of steam or hot wa ter, as fires would be dangerous to the in mates. We would also suggest the propriety of repairing the ' piazzas generally, and pla cing substantial blocks or pillars of brick under the hospital and insane quarters. i Visited the Work House, and found it in possession of two prisoners, the others,four in number, being absent, and, from wnat we ceuld see and ascertain, conclude that a sentence to the Work House, in our opin ion, amounts to no punishment. ! Visited the lail and found it in a cleanly condition. Found 5 males and 7 females from New Hanover, for various charges, and 8 male prisoners from other counties. There were no complaints whatever from any of the prisoners, and the provisions were very good and in sufficient quantities. The report closes with some comments in reference to the Janitor of the Courthouse, Iha Protracted fleeting; t ttae Bap tlatChurch. ; The series of meetings at the First Bap tist Church, inaugurated at the commence ment of the week just closed, have, under the 'conduct of Rev. F. M. Jordan, the evangelist, assisted by the pastor. Rev. J. B. Taylor, been constantly growing in inte rest and have culminated in a glorious re vival of religion in that church. Prayer meetings nave been neid every aiternoon, at 3 o'clock, while the night services have been attended by large . congregations, many of whom have presented themselves as subjects of prayer, while others have been visibly affected by the, earnest appeals of die minister of .God, whose whole heart seems to be in his work. We learn that about forty penitents presented themselves for prayer on Thursday night, and that'sev oral have made a profession of religion da ring the week. - in OI4 Acqualntaaee J Commander George Parker Ryan, who perished in the late disaster to the United States steamer Huron, at Kitty Hawk, on the North Carolina coast, was lieutenant and executive officer of the United States steamer Lenipee, - commanded by Captain Thomas 8J Phelps, United States Navy, Which was stationed in our waters during a greater part of the years 1865 and 1866, and was most likely known to many of our citizens; as he is represented to have been of a genial disposition and generally es teemed very highly by those who knew him. It was whiloliere that he received his commission as Lieutenant Commander, being then very young, as he was only 36 when he met with the disaster which re sulted in his untimely death, j Astronomical. . The alarm of fire , last night, about 12 o'clock, was caused by the burning of a frame building, occupied by colored peo ple, on the hill opposite to ' and near the Cotton Compress. The excitement was in tensified by the fact that many were under the impression at first that the fire was at tne Compress. : We were unable to ascer tain the exact amount of the loss. ; Fred Furlinback, a seaman, be longing oh board the Norwegian barque Senior, was arrested yesterday morning on the charge of desertion.
