Austria thinks there is no chance for successful mediation, and Ger many advises Turkey to treat directly with Russia. Turkey explains her position ; she is not vanquished, but is willing to con sider the proposal of the; Constantinople Conference. . The . Pope reported worse. - Short-horn breeders ' in Ken tucky have failed, and a general smash-up expected. -- J. T. Flarley, of Califor nia, has been elected to the Senate to suc ceed Mr. Sargent ; - A. new movement in behalf of Lerdo is expected. More failures reported. Joe Hester is in Florida aa special agent for the Govern ment.' ..Bismarck has triumphed, and the , German Cabinet will be remodelled. rX-In the French :IIouae of Deputies a bill was introduced abrogating the Maw on press offences. Deputies adjourned to the 8th 'of January. V New York markets: Money 6 per cent; gold dull at 1fl!U.nltimAnri - At 41 1 - Or! A mnto-' flour dull - and without decided change; wheat 13 cents better; corn a shade bet better; spirits turpentine quiet at 87 cents; rosin firm $1 72.' That fragrant fellow, the inevita ble Jo Hester, of Eu Klux memory, is in Florida, acting as special agent for the United States government in the matter of recovering lumber and logs sawed on government lands. If Jo Hester is the best and most trust ful agent Mr. Hayes can secure to look after the interests of the govern raent in the . Southern States, he would do well to shut, up shop; and take a winter tour, to the Arctic re gions, or go into retirement in; Ohio at an early day. Hester is not ' the fellow to be trusted in any matter of importance, and- his' presence, when clothed -with authority, is an insult to any people. Amend your ways, good Mr. Hayes. Now, please do. J The effort of Turkey to secure tha mediation of the Powers, it now ex plains what it meant. It did not ask mediation as a vanquished State, for it has two lines of defence still un broken and which it could hold, bnt it merely wished to intimate that it was willing to -consider the terms proposed (before the war) by the Constantinople) Conference. ! All of which is respectfully submitted, &c; &c, et ccetera.3at this looks a little bit "thin." If Turkey really believed it could hold those two lines it would not accept terms it had declined, and which caused the war. It is because it feels tha the . Russian force and momentum are "too great that it in vites now - the Powers ; to mediate. That is the milk in the : cocoanut. But Germany say ji in reply, you must treat directly with Russia, and Aus tria putsjla hands in its pockets and tells the Musselroan that mediation will not avail at this juncture. In the meantime, England is exercised and the Cabinet is divided. The great point now is to prevent a one sided alteration of the Treaty of Paris, r That ja to say, England does not intend, if it can be 'prevented, that the three Emperors shall settle the matter to suit themselves, and to her own injury. She proposes to have a finger in the pie. All of which is very natural. stmpisa CoDBly Falr ; From Raleigh Observer.! , Clinton, Dec. 15, 1877. . dTJBTH'ijiV. r After the closing of my report of yesterday th ecrowd increased to 4, 000, a much larger number than had ever attended at any one day of any previous Fair. f - - At 1 o'clock Gov.
