Price 25 cents., , 1 , WILMINGTON, N. C, SUNDAY. MARCH 31. 1878. rne Attempted Capture or the Al Jeged Chicken Thief-Arrest of BUI Qfflcers Gordon, Davis, Goodman and Walker, the force selected by the Mayor to 'endeavor to effect the capture of the alleged chicken thief, alluded to in our last issue, left the city at 7 o'clock Friday evenincand secreted themselves in the bushes close to the house of Melvina Manning, near Jump ing Run, where .'they remained in conceal ment and on the-look out until about 5 ociock yesterday morning, when, upon a preconcerted 'signal, they .surrounded the house. Upon entering, however, they found that the object of their search was not present, but discovered JSill Rivers, the colored man who was alleged by Melvina Manning to be the owner of. the gun which the supposed chicken thief -brandished so threateningly into, the faces of . Officers Gordon and King, on the occasion of their first visit to the premises-Friday morning. He was taken into custody, brought to the city and lodged" in tha : guard house. No information could be obtained from Rivers as to the whereabouts or identity of the so called Jones, but he. was very free in his comments upon the prowess of the fugi tive, remarking that it would take the whole police force of the city to effect his capture, evidently intending to convey the impression that he is a desperate fellow, There seems to be but -little doubt, that the so-called Tom Jones," or Johnson,, as he was at first designated by, the woman, Melvina Manning, when arrested, is no other than the notorious Tom Johnson, alia Elri or Elvi, the escaped convict, for whose capture a reward of $200 has been offered by the Governor. . . r . -:: Bill Rivers and the woman and children are held for the present to await further developments. New Hampshire memorial lastltate. i On account of several important : errors which occurred in our article in yesterday's Stab, under the above heading, we repro duce it corrected to-day: t The Winter term of the New Hampshire Memorial Institute,, which has now been in successKd operation in this city for the past twelve years, for the last five of which it has been under the charge of the present efficient Superintendent, came to an , end yesterday. The school is supported by the American Missionary Association,1 and is devoted to the education of the colored people in this city, the same Society having, we learn, schools in several Southern cities. - The Rev. D. D. Dodge is the Snperinten- j dent, assisted in the Normal Department by Miss Lwy Goodwin, as Principal, and Misses H. L. Fitts and Jnlia Goodwin as Assistants; and in the Primary Department by MissE. A. Warner, who has the entire Charge. There is also an afternoon and evening class, with Miss Martha Moore as teacher. -' V , " ' ' - This Association is extensively engaged in the work of education and formerly had the colored free schools of this city under Us charge. . The New Hampshire. Memorial Institute is an outgrowth of that work.hav- ing taken its present form since the county assumed the whole care of the other schools. A final exhibition,con8isting of dialogues, songs, recitations, speeches and reading of compositions, took place at the school room, corner of Seventh and Nun streets, last eve- nign, and, although the room was crowded, the utmost good ' order was preserved throughout, and the strictest attention paid to the exercises, which were of an interest ing nature, creditably reflecting alike upon the pupils and their instructors. The school has an average attendance of about one hundred -pupils, and it speaks volumes for the managers that they are able to control and direct this number In the pathway of knowledge with such satis factory results. It is clear that it must re quire much patience and labor, and appa rently neither have been lacking. - ' - At a meeting of the Republican Execu tive Committee of. Pender county, held at Burgaw yesterday, the ''sovereigns", were addressed by Alfred Lloyd, Geo. W; Price, Jr., W. H. Moore, and Archie.Walker, all colored, the apparent object being the shap ing of the future course of. the party of which they are representatives In New Hanover and Pender, A letter was read; from 31 C. Hill, colored,1 of this city, an nouncing himself a candidate for the Sen ate in opposition to W. H. Moore. We also earn that one David English, colored, an nounced Mr. F. W. Foster, one of our city Aldermen, as a' candidate for the Senate from New Hanover and Pender. Dlstarbaaee on the street. We are informed that a considerable row and disturbance occurred in the vicinity of the corner of Fifth and Walnut streets on Friday night, about 13 o'clock, ; in - which three intoxicated men were the principal actors,' and was of such a character as to disturb the entire neighborhood. In the midst of the row a whistle was beard sounding from- one of the neighboring j premises, evidently with ; the - intention of calling a stray policeman to the scene, but there appeared to be none Of the guardians of the night in that neighborhood at the time. - - A friend suggests . that if ; the advertisement asking sealed proposals for printing, advertising, and feeding of the muleaof the city is an ; indication of the practice of economy by bur "City Fathers,? that the labor on and cleaning of the streets, repairs to the fire engines, cisterns, , &c, be also given out by centract to the lowest re sponsible bidder, and a good justified bond be quired for the faithful performance of the contract, thereny treating', all .branches alike and saving the people's money, ij y 1 Morning MEETING OPMIOISTBATES. neecina - and oraranlaatloa : ' of the - Board of Aiaclstratee of NewHts , over conaty.
