The southeast .corner; of Second and
Princess streets was the scene yesterday
afternoon, shortly after six o'clock, of no
little excitement, which j threatened for a
few minutes to assume daagerous propor
tions. It seems that Daniel Howard, the
colored jailor, was standing on the side
walk on Second street, within a few feet
of its intersection with Princess, in front of
the Carolina bar, engaged in a political dis
pute with a colored individual named Ed-
. m . ' . T 'if .
wara i nomas, wneu j ernes cteaiuu, wuu
bad apparently been drinking to some ex
lent, came up and made some remark
which drew forth an angry response from
Howard, whereupon Heaton made for the
jailor in a manner that indicated serious
results to that individual . Several persons
were standing I near at the time, one of
whom, a colored : man by the .name of Si
moo Ricbardson.immediateiy seized Heaton
from behind, and at about the same mo
ment Howard whipped out a pistol from
bis pocket and discharged it at his antags
onist, without effect. . Others in the crowd
then seized Howard and finally, after
throwing him to the pavement, succeeded
in wrenching the pistol from bis bands,
when he was taken off in. the direction of
the Court House. In the meantime Heaton
had been struggling frantically to get at
Howard, but was restrained by the crowd.
He finally secured possession of . Howard's
pistol, however1, and flourished it above his
head, exclaiming, "I've got his pistol, too.'
By the way, this makes twice within as
many weeks that this seemingly irrepressi
ble individual has been fired upon without
effect, and it is a little remarkable that in
both instances he came out of the difficulty
with his antagonist's weapon in his posses
sion. At this rate be will soon have a little
arsenal of, bis own and can afford to defy
his enemies, if he does not already.
'Justice McQuigg finally succeeded in
getting Heaton away from the scene of . the
disturbance and the two repaired to the
office of the former in the postofflce build
ing, followed ' by a portion of. the large
crowd of colored people who had gathered
soon after the commencement of the row.
He remained in the office but a short time,;
however, when he again made his appear
anee upon the streets, and it was sometime
before Chief of Police Brock and his pom
of policemen succeeded in dispursing the
crowd. Before dark, however, the
streets bad been cleared and "quiet
once more reigned in Warsaw . " 5 An
exploring expedition is being talked of,
to find out what went with the ball that was
discharged from the murderous weapon, as
no indications as to its; probable where
abouts had been discovered when we left
the scene of the conflict;1 '
: No arrests had been made at last ac
counts, so far as we eould ascertain.
