Letter from Dr.' Curtis.
. ' , , Quarantine Station, July B0.
Editor Star: So far as I am concerned, I
do not desire to stir up any further th sub
ject ,of , yellow fever , in" Wilmington.
Enough has been said and written on it to
produce the opinion in ,the minds. of the
citizens of the country that it is an infected
and plague-ridden city. No w, so far is
that from the truth, that I believe ;it can be
confidently asserted' that; Wilmington; is
one of the healthiest cities on the Atlantic
coast' Yellow fever has visited thai city
but once in thirty yean : - The quarantine
establishment opposite Deep Water Point
has intercepted it invariably sioce its es
tablishment there, and kept it out of your
city: - Some time since I noti&ed in one of
your city papers that Dr. - Wood worth -was
astonished to find no adequate hospital ac
commodations in this port. Nowi , Dr.
Woodworth visited Smithville, spentvjust
half an hour in conference with the writer,
and returned to Wilmington, visiting no
place connected with quarantine.' I notice
further, from the Stab, that the Mayor1 of
Wilmington is of the opinion that there are
no suitable provisions for 'taking care of
tue sick and disinfecting vessels. ! am
'not aware that he hasjvisited tbelQuarantine
Station, or made any examination entitling
him to an opinion. v - ,
I will say, therefore, if you will permit
me, that all such : statements, when! pub
lished, are scattered broadcast through tbe
country, are very injurious to the interests
of Wilmington, and that they have not the
'slightest foundation ia truth ' N
The Quarantine Hospital.at Price's Creek,,
although not a costly or imposing structure,
is amply sufficient for all the requirements
of the port. ''Ten years' experience has
proven it so. It has never been found want
ing in space, or proper arrangements for the
care of the sick who have been placed in it.
The quarantine regulations are established
and pdt in force by tbe phyBician in charge,'
and they have the -force of law, and are
obeyed and respected accordingly t t,Whea
all the requirements of quarantine have
been fulfilled vessels are discharged, and are
free to pursue their voyage, I notice cer
tain ordinances of the city have been pro
mulgated. With those I have no power or
wish to interfere, and I presume they will
be executed by tbe proper executive officers
of the city.
1 Permit me, Mr.! Editor,5 to' express the
wish that a few articles could be 1 written
for your, columns, extolling' tbe shealth .of
Wilmington and its freedom from all pesti
lences, and that these, might supersede the
periodical crop of yellow ' fever articles.
TheOj- after a year or two of cheerful cor
respondence, pernaps the citizens or i .North
Carolina might feel willing to venture visits
to Wilmington in. pursuit of their business
or their pleasure, and, be able to, enjoy the
charming hbspitalities of your citizens,
unalloyed by visions of disease and death;:
i ; ',i - 1 Very respectfully, , v ..

-,i Mr. Editor :Tbe precautionary mea
sures of the I Mayor, relative to the terrible
scourge, yellow-fever, should receive the
commendation of all good citizens having
at heart the wel fare of our city. Itj would
be impossible to compute the .injury to be
inflicted on all the material interests ;of
Wilmington from the introduction of vel
low fever, and however harsh the preven
tive measures may' appear to be. the lesser
interests should submit for the good of the
greater,, in a case or this kind, the old
adage, "an ounce oi prevention is wortn a
pound of cure," is a thousand-fold applica
ble,' and inasmuch as the vessel in question
: nails from an infected port,: we j sincerely
trust , she will . not , be , allowed to
enter our 1 harbor until she has com
plied with every requirement demanded of
oer.-1 The temoie scourge that 'prevailed
in Norfolk and Portsmouth in the summer
of 1855 was introduced into, those cities by
a vessel from a West India nort. air, of the
crew of which were perfectly healthy,1 but
the bilge water irom which, when pumped
out, filled the two cities with the seeds of
tbe terrible disease h and in a short time
made them a common charnel houseL Let
no such visitation be tbe fate of . Wilming
ton from the lack of precaution bnthe part
of our authorities. Vigilance: and firmness
should be their watchwords, and let nothing
deter them from, their thorough exercise.
