At the session of the State Board of Canvassers, at Raleigh, on Friday, ho'th candidates from the First and ' from the Second District were repre sented by counsel. Before the returns from the First District were opened the counsel asked that the actual canvass of the vote be delayed until there shonld be afforded an opportunity of examining the returns from the various coun ties to ascertain if they were regular, and if they contained the vote actu ally cast, which, after a slight discus sion, was agreed to. The returns were then opened, and upon, their face showed the following vote: J. J. Martin, 12,135: J. J. Yeates, 12,084; J. B. Respess, 430, giving Martin a plurality over xeates of 51. Definite action as to this District was postponed. After considerable argument by the counsel of each candidate as to the power of the restraining order served upon the Board, restraining them from 'counting the vote in the Second District, pe Board adjourned with out final AclionI At a subsequent session the returns lrom the Third, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, Seventh and Eighth Districts were opened and the votes counted. The following are the official majorities: Third District, Russell, 881 ; Fourth District, Davis, 3,511; Fifth District, Scales, 2,646; Sixth District, Steele, 4,650; Seventh District, Armfield, 1103. In the Eighth District there was no opposition to Hon. R. B. Vance, his total bote being 2,894. The National Republican Kussell. Judge Russell, the so-called Green- backer, ' who is elected to succeed Waddellj of North Carolina, in the Forty-sixth Congress, has fallen down from thef pinnacle of independentism, so to speak, and begun to manoeuvre lor a re-election to a second term even before his first one begins. In a recent) speech at Wilmington he de clared himself in favor of the pay ment of all Southern claims, whether the claimants were loyal to the Union or not, and the pensioning of South ern as well aa Northern soldiers of the late war, ; each of whom, he de- , clared, fought for their country. It is evident from this that there will be a Fourth Party in the next House a Russell party; that is, if Russell lives to take his seat, which we fear he will not. Their bills are now in the Express office. O ur citizens generally are re quested to attend the meeting to . consider the city debt on Tuesday evening next. The annual meeting of the Na vassa Guano Company, of Wilmington, will be held at their office on the 12th inst Capt. A. B. Andrews, Superin tendent of the North Carolina Railroad, registered at the Purcell House last night. A meeting of the members of the Fifth Ward Backet Company will be held on Tuesday evening next, the 3d inst., at 7J o'clock. The handsome sum of $365 has been paid into the City Treasury by what is known as "drummers" during the month of November. " The receipts of cotton .at this port yesterday amounted to only 455 bales, the salea to 250 bales, and the exports (foreign) to 2,440 bales. The Register of Deeds issued nine marriage licenses during the past week, of which five were for white and four for colored couples. ; The fish market was better sup plied than usual yesterday, among which were noticed some very fine trout, which were selling at reasonable prices. We are requested to state that Rev. J. W. Craig will preach at the Fifth Street M. E. Church' this evening. There w.ll be no seivices in the forenoon. The old Board of County Com missioners will meet in adjourned session to-morrow morning at 10 o'clock, to corns plete their unfinished business. The new Board will meet and qualify at 12 o'clock, The City Clerk and Treasurer gives notice that all persons paying their city taxes on or before the 15th inst., will be allowed a discount of 2$ per cent. After that date the full amount with interest will be required. Every little saved is so much gained. ' ! We should have stated in our last that by a change of schedule on the Carolina Central (not W. & W.) Railway, which went into effect Friday evening, the passenger, mail and express train would arrive at Wilmington at 8.50 P. M. here after, instead of 9.40, as heretofore. In accordance with a resolution of the Board of Aldermen, passed at their late ' session, City Clerk and Treasurer Savage notifies the public that the city tax payers and bondholders, are requested to meet at the. City Court, room.on Tuesday evening, December 8d, at 7 o'clock, to j consider the city .debt - Mr. W, H Duguid and family 1 received a "pounding" at the hands of I ....... T r. One more' unsuceessful attempt ws made, yesterday, to capture the irrepressi ble Tom Johnson, ahas Alonzo . Elri. J. A. Ash and J W. Whitney, two Colored special deputies, were lying in ambush for him in the neighborhood of the spot where the old Union depot was formerly located, when they succeeded in capturing a friend of the noted desperado, who confessed that he was on his way to the city to purchase ammunition for Johnson, and who gave the party a good deal of information useful to them in the premises. They then sent the man on to perform his errand, while they remained in ambuscade awaiting the expected approach' of the defiant Johnson himself. In the meantime word had been sent to Daniel Howard, the jailor, of what was about being attempted, and requesting his assistance, with a small potae. Howard, with two or three others, started hurriedly for the spot; but, unfortunately for the success of the undertaking, they, not knowing exactly where : Ashe and Whitney were in ambush, went some dis tance beyond them, and suddenly, as they were walking along the embankment; a man was seen making his way leisurely along the railroad, whom they bailed, when he turned upon them, and they were as tonished to find themselves almost in the very presence of the re doubtable Tom Johnson. As soon as he discovered that he was in such close proximity to the officers of the law he very deliberately removed the cover from a weapon he carried in his hand, which they had supposed to be an ordinary gun, and crammed it into his pocket, when a very dangerous looking and exceedingly unin viting sixteen Bhooter was presented, for their inspection, with the remark from Johnson that if they could shoot any faster than he could they were at liberty to try. He then started off in the direction of the Athletic Club grounds.when Howard shout ed, intending to deceive him, "Look out, fellows, he's coming towards you," when Johnson wheeled and started in another direction, and thinking, probably, that be was about to be surrounded, made pretiy good time. He was fired upon three or four times, as he retreated, but succeeded in getting off Without, it is thought, re ceiving ny material injury, if he was touched a t. all . Ashe and Whitney think they would have captured him if he had been allow ed to proceed as far as their ambuscade before being made aware that an attempt was being made to "take him in out of the wet." ! v The Wilmington Light Infantry. The committee appointed by the Wil mington Light Infantry Company, at their recent meeting, consisting of four persons from the active members of the Company, two from the honorary members and two from the Teteran Corps, charged with the duty of devising some means to revive the Company and add to its strength and effi ciency, have had a meeting and have ap pointed two sub-committees, the duty of one of which will be to wait upon our mer chants and citizens generally.and the other to draft a suitable memorial or address to the citizens on behalf of ' the Company, which will be placed into their hands. We are glad to see that the committee have gone to work with -such earnestness And zeal in the matter, and hope that their efforts may b? crowned with the utmost imaginable success. This time-honored organization, which in days past has been looked upon with such pride, and has numbered in its membership so many; of Wilmington's best and bravest sons, many of whom now sleep in soldiers' graves, should not be allowed to languish and droop for laek of interest, but should be cherished and encouraged by the good people of Wilmington. After the Wrong man. A young gentleman of this city, who is not very deeply immersed in politics, was somewhat surprised yesterday afternoon to receive a telegram, dated , at Washington City, 2.10 P. M., and purporting to be from N. P. Deweese, Chairman jro. tern., coun tersigned by Alex. Troupe, Secretary, and couched in these words: "National Execu tive Council deem it important you should meet them here on. Monday. Don't fail." This was followed lter by another disj patch to the same purport, upon which our young friend, whose name happens to be Russell (without the prefix of D. L ), tele graphed to the Chairman pro. fen-of the Republican Executive Council, that he was not in politics, and that D. L. Russell must be the individual he intended; to Bummon to his councils, not himself, though the telegrams came to his name instead of that of tbe Congressman elect. The Concert. , ' -r I The grand vocal and instrumental con cert, alluded to a few days since as being in preparation under the auspices of Prof. VanLaer and the Cornet Concert Club, and for their benefit, will take place at the Opera House on Friday evening next, the 6th. 'in stant. We are assured that the very best amateur talent in the city will be brought into requisition on that occasion, and that the entertainment will be one of the most brilliant and enjoyable of the season. Prof. VanLaer, and the Club have always offered their services gratuitously whenever neces sity required, and now we hope the public will show their appreciation by giving them a rousing house on next Friday evening. Theyiintend, that the entertainment shall deserve such a recognition.' ', The proof of the value of any article is' its popular, use and the testimony in its' fa vor. The sale of Dr. Bull's great remedy for coughs and colds is immense and (the testimony voluminous. , V ' N. C, SUNDAY. DECEMBER 1, 1878. ITII Helen D'liete To .Morrow Night. Miss Helen D'Este, supported by a select Dramatic Company, will commence a brief engagement at the Opera House, in this city, to-morrpw evening, on which occa sion will be presented "Woman's Devo tion," to be followed on Tuesday evening by "A Celebrated Case." Miss D'Este, whose acting is highly commended by the press elsewhere, was quite a favorite with Wilmington play-goers five years ago, and has doubtless made much progress in the perfection of her skill and genius during the interval. The two plays she has selected are highly spoken of by our exchanges, and are said to afford the excellent artiste am ple, opportunity for the display of her ta lent, which is decidedly above the average of actresses in her peculiar line. We hope to see a large attendance at tbe Opera House to-morrow evening. City Bond Book. We noticed at the City Hall yesterday the new bond book, in which, in accord ance with a late order of the Board of Al dermen, is being made a complete record of all the city bonds issued, for what pur pose they were issued, the number of each, the coupons paid, and all other necessary information. The work, which is a model of neatness and convenience of arrange mcnt, has been done by Capt. John Cowan, and is approaching a state of completeness. When finished it will be a very useful book to the city, and will meet a want that has long been felt by the authorities. Local Continued on fourth page. A CARD. WmmraTGH, N. C, Nov. 29th, 1878.
