Ireland. It should not be put out of mind that the lecture of Col. McRae, on Ireland, was postponed until Tuesday night. If the Opera House is less than full we shall feel a degree of disappointment, because while the subjects of his other lectures afforded him fine fields for the -exercise of bis splen did abilities, neither of them offered half the opportunity which Ireland opens up for a display of the breadth and. depth of his research. The qualities and achieve ments, in almost every channel of human endeavor, of the Irish, are less understood than those of any other people, perhaps, on the globe, and the marshalling of the states man, soldiers, poets, divines and wits of the Green Isle, which we shall have on the occasion of the promised lecture, should tempt the presence of .all . who - would be both instructed and entertained. When the bill, in relation to extending the term of our city officers until the gen eral election in May, was up in the House of Representatives al Raleigh, last Friday, Mr. Scott said he didn't think it the square thing to continue the officers, but Mr. Jones thought differently, while Mr. Clarke thought the bill undemocratic, and' ought not to pass. Mr. Jones replied briefly in favor of the bill, and Mr. Scott then again spoke in opposition to the passageof the bill at this time. Mr. Lamb next spoke in favor of the bill; Mr. Ellison spoke against the bill and Mr. Hines in its favor. A motion made by Mr. Scott to postpone the matter to next Wednesday was voted down and the bill passed its second reading. The Senate has not considered the matter. Rlere mention Tne Criminal coon. Jndsre Meares exhibited patience, courtesy and dignity under many very provoking cir cumstances; Maj. John W. Dunham, the Clerk, greatly facilitated the convenience of the bar and clients by thorough famili arity with the details of his duties; Solicitor Moore was earnest in his efforts to lasso criminals for the public good, and Sheriff Manning and his officers performed their work without creating either confusion or delay.
