New York Jewish residents make, benevolent provi sion ' for Jewish immigrants and indi gent families. Mayor Cooper sent sharp letters to the Police Commissioners for mismanagement in New York affairs. The remains of the late Bayard Tays lor were injerredtyesterday. - There is considerable trouble among miners in the ' Mooongahela river valley. The great walking match has closed; at the latest accounts Rowell had made his 500 miles, thus winning the Champion Belt and the bet, and had left the track and gone to his I hotel; Ennis 473 miles and Harnman s 450. - New York markets: Money 34 per cent; cotton dull at 9 13-169 15-1G cents; flour, Southern in buyers favor and rather more active; wheat irregular; corn without important change; spirits turpentine easier at 2929c; rosin dull at $1 85$1 40. Mr. Charles L. Mosby, one of the 'most distinguished lawyers in the Lynchburg section of Virginia, died : on the 13th, in his 72 nd year. An immense crowd assemblod at Norfolk, Va., on the 13th, to witness tie launching of the new sloop -of- waf Galena, which was successfully accomplished. A large number of German socie ties took part in the ceremonies in honor of the late Bayard Taylor in I New York. Mr. Algernon S. Sulli van delivered the funeral oration. The remains were taken to Kennett 5quare,Penp.,the home of the eminent citizen and poet, for interment. The third night of "Pinafore" at Richmond was better and better, and . all were well pleased, according to the State. It says: "It is gaining very fast in favor, and this may be attributed to the better under standing between the orchestra and the actors. " It is so poor in actual material that it requires not only good singing and the very best orchestral accompaniment, but the highest order of burlesque acting." The Baltimore Evening Bulletin an able and sound Democratic paper, says of the Speakership: "The Southern Democrats are by no means unanimous in their opposition to Randall, aslhas been alleged. On the con trary, Mr. Randall's strongest friends are to be found among those Southern Demo- erais who believe that the first thing to do is to ensure Democratic control of the next Administration, and not- to imperil it by hasty or ill-considered action now." There is reported a . considerable movement of the colored people in Mississippi in the direction of Kansas. We wonder if they expect to go to Congress from that State? Did you ever know the Northern Republicans to vote for a "colored man and bro ther" for any office of honor, profit and trust? No, never. What, never? Well, hardly ever. There are six candidates for the Secretaryship of the Senate, viz: ex-Senator Dennis, of Maryland, Col. A. M. Waddell, ex-Representative Watterson, of Tennessee, Mr. Baell, lato of the Washington jPosJ, Mr. Burcb, editor of the Nashville Amer ican, and ex-Congressman Stenger, of Pennsylvania. Mr. Dennis thinks he will be the fortunate man. Senator Gordon, a telegram from Washington states, who .was sick in bed, was much affected on'hearing of the killine of Col.- Alston, and he telegraphed to" his son at Atlanta to say to Mrs. Alston that it would oe the duty of his life to stand to her and. her children, -so far ashe could, in the stead of the protector who had been so suddenly taken from them. As a matter of news for the Star aims to give the latest news always, we copy a paragraph from the Wash ington' special to the Baltimore American, a thorough-paced Radical paper, of the date of the 13th : "The Democrats are determined to or ganize the House at any and all hazards. It was stated some days since that, ir psrty exigency should require it, Clerk Adams.in making up the roll of the new House, would omit from it the entire Iowa delegation, oa the ground that the election should nave been held in NovembeMnstead Of in Octo ber. , There is now reason to believe that this course of action is being very seriously considered, if it has not already been de termined upon,", pi , . ,4 ; . The correspondent says that "Mr. Randall continues the favorite, and as matters stand, will be the caucus nom inee by a majority of at least twenty IT"- JLJL.1ELI XXIII.--N0. 148. ? j The struggle for the Speakership j uuuiiiuueit wuu uuauaieu vigor ana interest. Blackburn' friends are en tnusiastic. Randall is well eroomed. He has the invaluable wd of a half dozen experienced chairmen mittees. The well-informed Wash ington correspondent of the Rich mond State says in his letter of Fri day; . ' "- i "To return to the speakership, nearly all me Democratic newspaper correspondents are anti-Randall men, more for. the lake of a change, I suppose, than for any 'other reason. But I believe Randall, leads the field and guess he will be re-elected. Noth ing more than a guess can be ventured now.. I am opposed to every subsidy or monopoly, unless I have it, and that is why I am for Randall." I He says that it is understood that the Greenbackers will act in concert "with the Democrats upon the quea- I tion of the repeal of the election laws relating to supervisors and deputy marshal?, no matter what may be the result of their own efforts to control I the election of Speaker." It is a good way to turn to the . op position sometimes for political hews concerning your own party. A spe cial to the Philadelphia Flresst of the j 18 th, from Washington, says: "Members of the House, at ;.. thay -.arrive. are generally teen first in consultation with Randall, and it would be hard to say where iSlacKburn expects to set bis votes. Ran-, dall claims ninety votes, which gives him a large margin. Me staled in conversation to-night that the vote in the caucus in his 1 jodgment, would not vary five from that number, lie lias conversed personally, with most of the members who have arrived in the city, and thus far has found all bis friends true to their offers of support ! He has the almoit unanimous support of the Democrats of the New England and Middle States, Cox, of New-York, and Henkle, of Maryland.alonc having pronounced agamBt him. "Blackburn expected to have General Joseph E. Johnston on his side, but this experienced soldier has intimated that he Sineleton of Mississinni: Lewis of Ala bama; Atkins of Tennessee; and Buckner of Missouri, are also keeping their delega tions well in line. Kan dall docs not claim any votes in Kentucky. Springer and Mor rison constitute the sole disaffection in Illinois." Death of Judge Battle. Hon. W. H. Battle died at his res idence in Chapel Hill yesterday, in his 7 7 thy ear. We learn that the Post Office Depart" ment has agreed to put on a double line of postal cars from New xork to the various cities on the Atlantic Coast Line, with the object of improving the certainty of mail delivery on that route. By this arrangement the occasional difficulties and inconveniences caused by mis-connections will ' be entirely done away' with', and the business communities along this important route wfll be largely benefited. We learn that the cars will certainly, run through from New York as far as this place with out change, and possibly the whole route, by making the necessary changes in the trucks, &c. Bryan, of Pender, Meares, of Brunswick, and Davis, of Ca- tlWDa members of the late General As- sembly, were in the city yesterday. We are glad to learn that the condition of Mr. Benj. White, Sr., has somewhat improved, and that there are now hopes of his ultimate recovery. The bill to incorporate Corne lius Harnett Council.of the Royal Arcanum, of Wilmington, passed the House during the closing hours of its session Friday. A steeple is being erected on the new St. Luke's Church, corner of Se venth and Church streets, recently built by the colored Methodists worshipping at that place. A festival is advertised to be held at the Little Giant Hall on Wedses day next, March 19th, for a benevolent object. It is hoped- that there will be a good attendance. The Rt. Rev. Thomas Atkinso D. D., LLD., will visit St. Mark's parish and administer the Apostolic Rite of Con firmation on the evening of Sunday, March 16th. Services to commence at 8 o'clock, P. M. A cordial and respectful invitation is extended to ail. Seats free. ; Something happened to one of our vigilant policemen Friday night, which was not contained in the morning's report. A very demonstrative canine started across the street i i his direction, when he drew his club, and. running towards the animal with the view of frightening him, pitched head foremost and heels upwards over the enclosure to a grass plat, which he had not noticed.- The dog enjoyed the mishap, if he didn't. We have been . requested by Rev. James W. Craig, Chaplain of the Seamen's Friends' Society, to state that, commencing with this afternoon, the exer cises at the Mariner's Church, or Seamen's Bethel, on Dock, between Front and South Water streets, will be held every Sabbath afternoon at 4 o'clock, instead of in the morning, as heretofore, and that a cordial invitation is extended to the public gene rally, and especially to seamen to attend and participate in the exercises. Narrow Escape. Yesterday, between 12 and 1 o'clock, on Front street, in the vicinity of Dudley's Grove, a lady Was driving with a horse and buggy, having two children in the vehicle with her, and had arrived at a point on the street where there is a steep declity, per haps fifteen or twenty feet in extent, when the horse suddenly became frightened at some legs that had been piled near by and started to run, almost immediately plung ing off the embankment. He had gone but a few steps down the declivity, however, when the Bhafts broke, the harness gave way and the buggy capsized and rolled on to the bottom, the horse in the meantime retaining his footing and finally getting back on the road: The lady and children were thrown out, but fortunately received no injury of conse'quence, but the buggy was badly smashed. It is likely that pro vision will be made to prevent such acci dents in future. . Thermometer Record . The members are notified, however, to assemble at their hall at 9 o'clock a. m., in full regalia, for the purpose of attending the usual religious services at St. Thomas' Catholic Church. . The Wm. Nyee. The papers having passed and the bar gain been sealed, we are at liberty to state that the 'handsome little, steam-tug, Tr?.. Syce, formerly the property of Messrs. Lemmerman & Coney, has been purchased ahd.is owned jointly by Messrs, It .Heide, A3 S. Heide and H. H. Heide. She will be run on the liver as usual,as a tug boat. This popular seasational operetta will be produced by the Hollman Troupe, at the Opera Housein this city, on Thursday eve- ning next. . . The box sheet will be opened to-morrow evening. It is said' to be the 1 greatest hit of the times, and the whole En glish world has gone wild Over it from the Hebrides to Australia. The entire stage of the Opera House will be cleared of scenery and "flies," and turned into a full-rigged ship, upon whose decks the entire action of the opera takes place. It is full of the most sprightly music, some of them rare mor ceaux, which have long been popularized, and the sitaations are of the most laughable and ludicrous nature. .;i saB) saw A IHTyaierloas Barrel, t t Ellas Halsey, the well known colored man who sells wood on South Water street, noticed what he supposed to be an empty barrel on his wharf yesterday morning, and was about to give it a toss into the river, or attempt 10 do so, when he discov ered thet it was filled with molasses. How it came there he could give noaidea, and a ast accounts' he was still looking for the Owner' of the "sweetnin . The general impression is that it was stolen and carried there for the. purpose of taking it away in a boat, but that the thief believing himself in danger of. detection "and capture, bad left it where it was found. The Baltimore Steamers. The announcement of the proposed with drawal of the Baltimore steamers from the line between that city and Wilmington has caused no little comment in commercial circles here. It is claimed by the compa ny, we understand, that they lost money by the project, and were unwilling to risk a continuance of the line without some better assurances of success in the future. However' this may be, it is the impression 6t knowing ones that the steamers will soon be restored to the route and their reg ular trips resumed if not by the present company, then by some other that may in the meantime secure control of the line.
