The exam-: iiiation of witiiesses in the trial of Poindexter, for the murder of Curtis, was continued until half-past 10, o'olock last night and resumed this morning. Mr. A. Wilson, who witnesseq the affray, said he thought Mr. Cur tis struck first, and then Jthe shots' aad blows were continued rapidly Policeman Oolgan, who made the arrest,, did . not t see the shootings Poindexter acknowledged the deed and surrendered the pistol. V. S. Carl ton testified to being present at the: Curtis, saving, "You insulted a lady! here Saturday with Mrs.Urump." Mr. Curtis said: "I am not aware of it, and if I did I will beg her pardon. V: Mr. Poindexter. said "You did,'! and drew a whip, and commenced cutting him over the shoulders. He struck him eight or ten times, when witness came up and stopped the difficulty. uurtis seemed not to oe aware or what the trouble was about, and could get no explanation. Trouble from the Greenbackers is pretty sure to come, if the fourteen adhere to their resolution in caucus to vote , together upon all financial questions and against attaching political amend ments to the appropriation bills. That would leave . the Democrats with a maioritv of only three votes, including Speaker Randall's,for Hen- lcfc Wright has gone backtp ihe them say they would vote for the amendments to the election laws if pre8ented separate from an appropri- ation bill. It is reported that the Claytons, who have been working .the Ore Knob cotton mine on a very extensive scale for the past several years, have gotten control of the Garden Hill mine in Guilford county, uud it is expected that they will soon begin work there. At the hour of 11:25 A. M. , yesterday, the train "of the Central Railway reached the depot, and besides a large number of friends of the family, a detachment of s th9 Wilmington Light Infantry was present. The remains were removed from the special car, the cortege .was formed, and, with the citi zens soldiery in front, all that was spared of the amiable and beloved lady was borne to the residence' of her kinsman, Mr. Jno. E. Lippitt. The scene was one of un usual solemnity, and inspired general sym pathy for those who- are specially bereaved by the death of Mrs; Gregorj-. j The funeral takes place this afternoon at 4 1 o'clock, from St. James' Episcopal Church, and the W. L. I , in which the de ceased held membership, will attend-in a body and ia full uniform as a further tribute to the deceased. Kill 1 nee staek. Before Justice Gardner, yesterday morn ing, was heard the cases cf Creach and Mrs. Ward, of Oolambus, vs. the Receiver of the V. C. & AJ R. Rm for damages for stock alleged to have been killed on said road. The attorney for the road moved the dismissal of the cases on the ground that the Court had no jurisdiction in bringing suit against a Receiver of the road. In other words, that when a road has passed into the hands ef a . Receiver it is not liable to any such action. The motion was over ruled and the cases tried, upon the conclu sion of which judgment was rendered for the plaintiff in, each case, and the attor ney for the roaoVappealed to the Superior Court. ..: , .. : Mr. Junius Davis appeared for the road and Mr 1 Ricaud for the plaintiffs.
