i ThO members of the Cape- Fear Steam Fire En
gine Company desire to state, that in the discharge
of their duties as Firemen they never intentionally
damage property; and that the damage to the goods
of Mr, B. Solomon, during engine practice last De
cember, was purely accidental, and occasioned by
the stumbling of the Pipemau; and, that shortly
after the occurrence the Foreman went to Mr. Solo
mon, and in the prcseaea of MreJ. L Macks asked
him to value the damaged goods and. the Company
wouln pay for them and take them off his hands.
Mr. Solomon did aot accept the proposition, but
Tendered a bill to the City tor 33 OS, which bill the
Committee en Fire Department of the Boat d of
Aldermen ordered to be paid aad deducted from the
apportionment due this' Company from the City,
without giving the Company a hearing, or Inquiring
if the Company had refused to pay foe the damage.
We beg that no more bills for damages done by our
Company be presentee to the City, unless we first
refuse to pay .them. When Mr. jSolomoa decided
to present a hill ;f or the damages, it seame to as
that he should have first presented it to na, and not
to the Committee on " Fire Department, as If the

the action of the Committee was Jnst. in aot giving
the Company a hearing, aad respectfully enter our
