A Bare and Catrlona Fish. - .
We had brought to this office, last night,
a very curious specimen of a fishV' which)
was caught on TopsaU Sound, by M
Sneedenj yesterday morning. Mr. Sneeden I
left the fish on exhibition
bibition at Huggins'. store i
during the day, where it- was viewed by
many curious persons, none of whom
eould designate Its variety except one pro
fesaional gentleman, noted for his naturalist
tastes. This gentleman, after consulting
the authorities "pronounced it to be what is
khowny aa! the ,,hairtailed mackerel, or
scabbard fish," a variety very rarely seen; u
I- The fish looks like a . cross, between a
mackerel and an eel, with a scaleless siting
much like the former In. shape it closely
resembles a. scabbard is about two feet
and a half long by two inches wide at the
broadest part, its body terminating in aflat
tail, nearly round at the ends and about six
inches long, with slight growth nearly
resembling ' hair. ' The head is somewhat
similar in shape to a mackerel, with the
under part of the; mouth protruding in
advance of the nose. The mouth is fur
nished on the sides with rows of fine, sharp
teeth, while those in front are long and
resemble a squirrel or a rat. : v Taken alto-

of the Sunday-school and Sewing Society
of that church. Ice cream and strawber

to visit the seashore.
In justice to the managers of this excur
sion we would state that at the time they
made their arrangements they knew no
thing of the proposed "Pilots' Excursion"
for that day, as might be inferred from a
notice in our paper-ef Wednesday last.
When the fact did come to their know
ledge they considered it too late to change
the ; time without injury to themselves.
They had no disposition, as we are assured,
to run in opposition to the "Pilots' Excur
sion," in the objects of which they deeply
sympathize.
A New industry,
A new industry and article of export has
lately come to the surface in our commer
cial world, in the hitherto neglected, de
spised and apparently worthless pine straw,
which formerly could not bs utilized in
any other manner than in making hog
beds, covering Irish potato beds, straw
berry beds, &c. Mr. C. H. Wessell, of
this city, acting as agent for a factory in
New York, is now buying and shipping all
the pine straw he can get. He shipped
eight tOBS by the last New York steamer,
and he informs us that the factory requires
about fifty tens per week. It is said that
at the factory where it is consumed it first
undergoes a sweating process, by which an
article of spirits is obtained which is used
for 'medical purposes, and that it is then
manufactured into paper and also into an
article for staffing mattresses. Quite a
number of the colored population are now
engaged in baling the straw and bringing
it to this city for the purposes above men
tioned. ' ' " ,:" ; '2"' ,:y '
