The Exeanlsn Tuesday, ' There will be an excursion on Tuesday next, the 20th instant, under the auspices of the Fifth Street M. E. Church, on the steamer Passport, to Smithville and Fort Caswell, the proceeds to be for the benefit of the Sunday-school and Sewing Society of that church. Ice cream and strawber ries will be served by the ladies at reasona ble prices. . Tickets are offered at very low figures.and all can embrace the opportunity to visit the seashore. In justice to the managers of this excur sion we would state that at the time they made their arrangements they knew no thing of the proposed "Pilots' Excursion" for that day, as might be inferred from a notice in our paper-ef Wednesday last. When the fact did come to their know ledge they considered it too late to change the ; time without injury to themselves. They had no disposition, as we are assured, to run in opposition to the "Pilots' Excur sion," in the objects of which they deeply sympathize. A New industry, A new industry and article of export has lately come to the surface in our commer cial world, in the hitherto neglected, de spised and apparently worthless pine straw, which formerly could not bs utilized in any other manner than in making hog beds, covering Irish potato beds, straw berry beds, &c. Mr. C. H. Wessell, of this city, acting as agent for a factory in New York, is now buying and shipping all the pine straw he can get. He shipped eight tOBS by the last New York steamer, and he informs us that the factory requires about fifty tens per week. It is said that at the factory where it is consumed it first undergoes a sweating process, by which an article of spirits is obtained which is used for 'medical purposes, and that it is then manufactured into paper and also into an article for staffing mattresses. Quite a number of the colored population are now engaged in baling the straw and bringing it to this city for the purposes above men tioned. ' ' " ,:" ; '2"' ,:y ' aw i The Pilots' icxenralon. Onr f eatlera will bear in rnind the excur- sion to Smithville on Tharsdsy. The pro ceeds will be for the widows and orphans of the pilots who. sacrificed their lives irr the discharge of duty sereral years ago. and it Is hoped that a large number of ex cursionists,, both ladies and gentlemen, will Dot only patronize the excursion, but at tend the monumental , dedicatory services at SmithTilla.H The address by Rev. IL A. Yates, of this city, will of itself be a rich treat, if we are permitted to express an opinion based upon his fine pulpit ability as displayed in his ministrations at the Front Street Methodist Church 10 this place. Ladies having flowers to contribute for the purpose of decorating the graves of the brave pilots, will please have them at the boat Thursday morning before the hour for leaving.
