Latimer, who re ported that while riding up from the sound on horseback he had been stopped by two men, at a point near the mineral spring, at about 7i o'clock, but, thanks to the speed of the horse and his cries of murder I help! &c, he had escaped with his money and his life. l course the Sounders were con siderably exercised about the occurrence; the mote io since tiro young white men had reported a similar experience on last Wed nesday night, and the event was widely discussed and generallycredited. Later news from a gentleman who was on his way to the sound when the affair occurred, and who saw Charles at the toll- gate, places the affalrin another light. Our informant states: that he and a friend were riding along very quietly until they were in about : ISO yards of the . Mineral Spring bridge, when . suddenly they .heard loud and repeated cries 'just aroundjhe bend of the road, and the clatter t)f a horse's feet as if coming very. rapidly.. Supposing it to be a run-away, they drove to the side of the road, by which time they distinguished horse and riderthe former at a 2 :40 gait and the latter yelling help! murder! help! murder ! at every breath. So quickly $id the horse pass, and so frightened was his rider, that the buggy was not noticed at all, and the occupants deemed it prudent to return to the Toll House to ascertain what was the matter. The story was soon related, upon which the keeper of this Toll House was asked if he had any fire arms, and replying that he lad an old ' musket, wasasked to lend it. , His wife vetoed this ..' -. -- - ; . - ---,- 'ij motion, nowever.very empnaucaiiy, stating that if that musket was . loaned she would leave.the house, as She had no idea of being without a gun with all those doings around. The toll gate . keeper thereupon guessed that he couldn't let the weapon go, and the occupants of the buggy drove to the house of Mr.'W. P. Canaday in search of imple ments of war.- While at Mr.: Canaday's gate ' two : young negro men "came out of the road to the left and "one of the gentlemen thinking perhaps that Charles, fright was groundless' asked them if they were the burglars,', They answered "Yes, sir, we scared that nigger to death." "How was it f", was asked. "We was coming along in the middle of the road ainging, and did not bear; the horse until ho was right on us, almost, when I looked Tound and jumped, to one side and hollered 'lookout to the other boy, and he happened to jump to the other side and hollored too, and then that nigger on I the horse commenced to holler murder and - help I and made de horse fairly fly up. de roadV We wubout as scared as he was, and turned off into da road atones.
