The Clearing House operations in New York for the past year amount ed to $26,578,881,753.36, it being an average of $86,576,162.00 daily. He defined the issues of the campaign as he understood them, waved and flapped the bloody shirt, denounced bitterly "Democratic heresies," and retired well pleased with bis oratorioal flapdoodle. Both sides appear to be confident of a victory next Tuesday in Ohio. At the Conkling headquarters in New York the news is regarded as every way encouraging. It u given out that there is no doubt whatever of Foster's election. On the other band the news at Gramercy Park is said to be cheering, and the old man who presides there is well pleased at the outlook. It will require that voting shall be done before the false and true prophets are discerned. The Stab proposes to wait until it hears more. The "I told you so game" is gene rally played after an election. "You pays your money and you takes your choice." It is only some weeks after the result is ascertained that the neat little game known as "The Little Joker" is permissible. The VOL. XXV. NO. 17. The latest reliable news concerning the situation in New York is to be found in the following paragraph from the correspondent of the Phila delphia Ledger writing from that city on the 8th inst. He says: "To recur to the local situation, Mr. Johu Kelly is said to be weakening as a candidate for the Governorship in opposi tion to Lucius Hobinsou. Ex-Go v. Sey mour's tecent letter in favor of 'regular nominations' is telling severely against the Tammany chieftain, and those who know him best say it would not be surprising if, yielding to the counsels of his more cau tious friends, who do not wish to be con sidered outside of the' party, be should withdraw his name from (be canvass in the course of a few days. The trouble with Kelly in an emergency of this kind is, that be has no patronage worth speaking of, and he ought to know that as human nature is at present constituted, it is impossible to run any kind of a faction in New York without a plentiful supply of loaves and fishes." The Washington correspondent of the Baltimore American, Republican organ, in his letter of Oct. 7tb, says of the situation in Ohio: "The latest advices received here from Ohio are to the effect that the Democrats are rapidly losing all hope of electing their State ticket, and are concentrating their strength and energies upon the legislative districts, in order to at least save the legis lature, and thus secure the United States senatorship. The Ewing men here express themselves in such bitter terms against Thurman and, his followers, that any one would imagine that the Ohio elec tion was an event of the past, and that the hapless Ewing had already been laid low in the dust. Mr. Thurman's position is, therefore, anything but pleasant. The probabilities are, however, mat the sweep ing Republican victory of Tuesday next will reuder the threatened attack in his own camp unneccessary." Capt. Payne, who distinguished himself in the recent fight with the Indian, is another "maguificent Vir ginian." Maj. Thornburgb, who was killed, was from Tennessee. Spirits Turpentine. Their first meet took place at the Fair Grounds, near this city, Wednesday morning. The mem bers present consisted of Messrs. E. E. Burress, W. P. Oldham, J. H. Daniel and Albert Gorr. This day they caught two foxes, after one of the finest and most ex citing runs ever experienced by tbe oldest sportsman of the party, the dogs being in excellent trim. Mr. Oldham's "home run" was pretty good, too. ( He was six miles from town when the last fox was bagged, and upon looking at bis watch he found that he bad just twenty-five minutes in which to reach tbe Court House in time to be present when a certain case was to be called in which he was iuierested. He dismounted in front of the door just as Sheriff Manning, with his Lentorean voice, called out his name from the window. In Thursday's heat Messrs. Burruss, Freeman and Oldham participated. They ran two foxes at the same time and cap tured one, and also started a deer. The dogs on Thursday were not in such good trim as on the previous day. If three foxes iu two days is not considered fair hunting they will make it four next time. So say the gentlemen of the Club.
