The Governors of the old Thirteen Stales have met in Philadelphia to arrange for the Centennial Anniversary at Yorktown, Va ; Governor HoUaday, of Virginia, was cho sen President; Governor Jams, among others, spoke. Dr. Soule says the $5,000 was offered for the winner of a five mile sculling race; no competitive test has been made; the offer is rone wed; what Hanlaa will do is not known. The Gate City Guards met with a splendid re ception at Boston; the Boston Light Infan try presented tbem with a fine medal. Rickard & Co., of Brockton, Mass., had I heir shoe manufactory destroyed; loss $85,000. Nb new cases of yellow fever have developed at Forest City, Arkansas, and the indications are generally more fa vorable. The accounts af the deeds of the outlaws in Baldwin county, Georgia, have been exaggerated, although they have been guilty of many crimes; the good peo ple of tba county are aroused and deter mined to bring tbem to justice. The meeting of the Governors at Philadelphia was adjourned a ter adopting resolutions and appointing committees to make ar rangements for the celebration of the York town Ctnlenuial. England has in formed Russia that British influence must dominate in Afghanistan's foreign relations. The total number of new cases of yel low fever at Memphis, for the week ending yesterday, were 59; deaths for the week 31. In tbe case of Blair, charged with killing bin coachman, at Newark, H". J , the judge charged in favor of the prisoner. Several workmen were injured by a falling bridge near Columbus, Ohio, yes terday. The Board of Health of Forest City, Arkansas, warn people not to come in that place. The Gate City Guards left Boston for New York yester day; each member of the Company was presented with a very handsome sou venir by their generous entertainers New York markets: Money active at 5 7 per cent.; cotton steady at lOf&llc; Southern flour unchanged and fairly active; wheat opened 35 cents lower; ungraded winter red fl 85Q1 47; corn ilc lower, closing at 606l cents; spirits turpentine firmer at 34 cents; rosin firm at $1 40 1 47J. Gen. Grant received a grand ova tion in Oregon. He made a longer speech than usual. The Ford Juveniles handed over $131 at Charleston for the benefit of the Hood orphans. The Workingmen's Central Union in New York have nominated John Kelly for Governor. Counterfeiters in Texas are said to be doing a lively business. They are for hard money and have no respect for greenbacks. Ex Gov. Hendricks says the result iu Ohio has not ohaoged his opinion that Grant will be the Republican nominee in 1880. Some of the Republican papers talk nt toe tirant boom ceasing, we do not believe a word of it. If Grant wants the nomination he will get it Prince Napoleon's will shows that he is worth $300,000, exclusive of houses in Paris and considerable landed estates in France and Switzer lor.) naannan A good sign. New York has got sick of walking matches. The eon try has been sick for some time. What a pity that so much muscle cannot be bet tar employed. Hereafter none bat wooden guns should be tolerated on the mimio stage. No real shooting irons, loaded with shells, should be allowed. One murder is enough. Since the Ohio election the Balti more American sent its Stalwart shirt that had baanmo a little limp to the Radieal laundry and had it stiffened up. Its hue, too, is something more sanguinary. Both parties are straining every nerve in . New York. . It is said that the srawit ' w- war flow freely and the uoaJ f-oWWg "bar?" may be heard at the VUBqtmtUm of Cornell and of Robinson. The talk in Washington and New York city now is, as New York State goes in November so will the elec tion co in 1880 for President. John Kelly is taking a big load upon him self i f tbat be the case. The venerable Mrs. Gales, widow of the late Joseph Galea, who was a great man and a great editor, apd who was a power in the old Whig party when he directed the fortunes of the National Intelligencer, died in Washington on the 15th iost., aged 1. She was, we believe, a Miss Lee, The Morning Star VOL. XXV.-O. 24. of Virginia. She was a highly ac complished and admirable lady. At one time she was handsome and knew well how "to dispense an elegant hospitality." Joseph Gales was son of Joseph Gales who founded the Raleigh Register early in this centu ry, and was a brother of the late Weston R. Gales, and ancle of the late Major Seaton Galea, whose mem ory is cherished by so many friends. NKW AttVKR'riNKITIKN TS, Just So. E. F. Johnson To arrive. F. M. Kino & Co. Stand. Nearly two months with the traditional "r" in them have passed, and yet, owing to the warm weather that has prevailed, very few of the luscious bivalves have been brought to this market. In a conversation with Mr. J. H. Marshall, one of our exten sive oyster dealers, yesterday, he informed us that the prospects of a good oyster sea son are very promising, and that as soon as the cool weather sets in, provided we are to have any winter to speak of, oysters will be more plentiful, of a finer quality, and cheaper than they have been in our market for many years. He bases this opinion upon the fact tbat more attention is no w being paid to their cultivation than formerly, especially in the New River section, from whence our finest oysters are received. He tells us of some quite extensive oyster gardens, particularly that of Mr. Hill King, located not far fremerwrath of New River, which covers an area of thirty acres, nearly the entire surface of which is lined with oysters, and in some instances piled upon each other. These, too, are very fine ones, as he has taken very few from the beds during the past year or two. A party who went on a reconnoitering expedition through Stump Sound and its adjacent waters, recently, states that the supply of oysters in that section is also much larger and finer than usual. So, "weather permitting," we may look for the market to be well supplied when the season fairly opens. The Increased demand, predicated on .the fact that more will probably be shipped hereafter than formerly, wilt only have the effect of increasing the supply; while the greater the demand the more at tention will be paid to their culture, which will necessarily have the effect of im proving the quality1 of oysters brought to market. The A nab Richmond comic Opera Company. Miss Adah Richmond delighted all Who witnessed her performances here last year, and the , favorable impression she then created will attract a large audience to see her in "Fatlnitza" to-morrow night. Of the performance of the company in this piece the Baltimore American says: "Von Suppe's 'Fatinltza' was excellently rendered at the Holliday Street last night by the Adah Richmond Opera Bouffe Com pany to a large audience, which had as sembled to hear this bright operatic gem well given, and the audience accorded to the singers throughout the heartiest ap plause. Miss Adah Richmond's rendition of the role of the fair Vladimir is exceed ingly pretty. She has a full, rich voice, and one which seems peculiarly suited to the role of the effeminate young lieutenant, although it can hardly be called a soprano. The acting throughout is excellent, and ahe throws an amount of spirit and life into the character which cannot fail to be fully ap preciated. She was warmly received, and several of her solos were encored. Miss Belle Girard appeared to great advantage as the Princess Lydia, and made quite a success of her part. She has an unusually fine voice, and her notes ia the upper register are particularly fine and clear. Mr. J. C. Armand's Julian Hardy, the Herald correspondent, was a delightfully humor ous bit of acting, and with his fine tenor voice he made quite a hit as the hero of the note book. The part of General Timofey Kan tchacoff was admirably done by Mr. Livingston Kent, ana he used his bass voice with excellent effect. Izset Pasha, the un speakable hot delightfully wJttr was an that could be wished, and Mr. J as. Vincent as Stripano, MS James Sturgis as Mustapha, the guardian 'angel' of the harem, and the other minor characters were without exception satisfactory. The cos tumea are gorgeous, and iu the oriental scene in the Pasha's palace the effect pro duced by the rich dresses of the fair deni zens was dazzling. The opera is put upon the stage in a faultless manner, and the opening scene, with the snow-clad hills and the village in the distance, was beautiful." psawe Rail Haaaasi." A fearful and probably fatal accident happened to Sr. Frank Williams, living near Summerville, Brunswick county, ill Thursday afternoon last. It seems that Mr, Williams was on his grape arbor picking crapes, when one of the rails of which the arbor was constructed broke and he fell upon the jagged end of one of the pieces, which entered a portion of the body and was projected through another. In this horrible condition the poor man remained until his wife and a colored man cans to bis assistance, when, after much difficulty, I 1 they finally succeeded in palling the piece of rail out. The unfortunate man w then carried to his house and a phy sician sent for, who did what he could to relieve his intense sufferings, bat we learn tbat no homtf tare antertafneat of hia tecovery. fWeMwdmfracle if he were to do so, under tba cirvnces Mr. Williams is about forty-eight years: old, and well known among the majority oC our business men.
