Mapleson's new Italian opera troupe do not appear to have mad 3 a hit 111 Mew York thus far. Page MoCarty's "Buttons" turns oat to be a success after all tbe damning with faint praise. The export trade of New York last week fell off three million dollars compared with the week before. Gen. Peyton Wise and Judge J as. Neeson got into a quarrel about a seat in a theatre in Richmond. Pistols and coffee were scented by a police man and they were bound over to keep the peace. A New York letter of October 21st thus refers to the dry goods market: "The tone of the cotton goods market has greatly improved, and brown and bleached fabrics are in active demand and firm. Prints remain quiet. Dress goods and ginghams are sluggish, but steady in price." During the last two years some 3,000 English farmers with their families have emigrated to Texas. Tbey are all reported as prospering. They devote themselves principally to the raiainff of oattle and sheep. Secretary Evarts waved the bloody shirt tremendously in his harangue in New York on Tuesday night. This move the Washington Post to speak of the Secretary of State aa "a how ling demagogue." That seems to ex press it. After junketing around for months Hayes b as got baok to Mr. Til den's quarters in Washington. A Cabinet meeting was held, it being the first in a long time. Some one suggested that the members had not seen each other in such a long time it would be neces sary to introduce them to each other. t mm rtSiSf! m . CJEM . Tbe Chilians have caught him and tbey propose to hang him. It seems that the "Colonel" wanted to blow up a Chilian iron-clad after offering his services to that side. The "Colonel" is an American, and "fit, bled and died" on the "tother side." Let him bang. It will serve him right. This refers only to his treachery. We notice in a Republican paper that two oolored men from North Carolina are reported to be in Wash f I Vtt Ik M -aT-k-sv TTa Lr. -- J 11 Ei 1V1UK1N 1JN U ioTAK. I , , , . ' '-'I " ' ' 1 ' VOL. The Re publ ioa n paper say s : "Tbe two men said that when they reached Indiana they received such tempt ing offers from several parties to furnish work to the entire number that they con cluded to accept. They are now returning to North Carolina to bring their people to their future domiciles, l be men, who are un usually toteUrgent, think that Indiana offers many advantages to colored etnigraots, and if those who are about to settle there thrive and prosper, as they probably will, several thousand of colored people from both North and South Carolina will surely fol low." It will require many thousand co lored immigrants to make Indiana Republican. Their votes will not be needed in Kansas, but they will be in Indiana hence tbe change in the programme and "the tempting offers." Do you see ? The obsequies of the late Bishop Whiitingharu, of Maryland, were very imposing, lney iook piace- i mi V from St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Baltimore. The following Bishops were present: A. U. Cooper, the American forger on trial in London, plead guilty to both charges, and was remanded to his cell at Newgate for sentence. A London special says of him: "Cooper baa a small, classically-shaped head, with dark and wavy hair. It was re marked by an American present that be bears somewhat of a resemblance to Booth lie looked cool and determined. His dress was faultless. Near tbe bar sal a handsome woenau dressed in mourning, who passed Coopers wifr. She was deeply af fected." THB WBIiDON FAIR. Tbe Suffolk Grays Capture ibe Prize Flasr. Our farmers can do nothing in the way of preparing their soil for a wheat crop. Our branches are dry and our larger streams are rapidly failing. Wells and springs are failing everywhere. A very interesting meet ing is in progress at Salem Church, conduc ted by Rev. Lewallen. H The Observer says that Rev. J. F. Butt, of Charlotte, is in correspondence with parties at the North with a v 1 m w to ob taining canvass capable of covering sev era! thousand people, which he proposes to put up on the vacant lot near his cnurcn. He proposes to begin here a aeries of meet ings which shall last a month, and be con ducted by some of the moat distinguished revivalists in the country. Oxford Torchlight'. He wanted to trade horses, but could find no one willing to trade without "boot" This be did not have; but bis new shoes and empty pocket-book were substi tuted, and tbe result was that be lett his mule and pocket-book and new shoes, and rode a blind "mar" home. f The Asheville Citizen of the 16th says that during the month of October 140 feet of tbe bench of the Swannanoa tunnel were removed, leaving only 140 feet to be removed, and then the tunnel will be passable for trains. The trains on the other side of the mountains are now run ning within eleven miles of Asheville, and in six weeks it is thought they will run within six miles of Asheville. Durham Recorder: Died, in Hillsboro, on tbe 15th instant, after a lin gering illness. Mrs. Susan, wile of. Isaac Keid, JSsq , and eldest daughter of tbe late Hoc. Frederick Nash, in the 74th year of her age. We learn that in jferson coun ty the cores of bright tobacco are regarded as the best ever known in tbe history of the industry; and that bright yellow bears an unusually large proportion to . the crop. Urarmlle county items: Oxford Is a beautiful town, with its broad, well shaded streets, its handsome and commodious man sions, retired with impressive dignity back from the streets, embowered in foliage and adorned with shrubbery, its clean gray sois and its prettily undulating surface; and with its cultivated residents must make it a very attractive place. The de struction of barns by fire curing has been very great this fall. It is thought that at least one hundred barns have been burned in tbe county. Charlotte Observer: The Spar tanburg & Asheville Railroad was consid erably washed by the rains of last week. The train which left Spartanburg Saturday did not reach Hendersonville until Sunday night. The damages have, however, been repaired, and the trains are again running regularly. It is learned here that as the result of the destruction of the Atlantic Hotel by the storm at Beaufort, last sum mer, two new hotels will in all probability be put up, the one on the Morehead side of the sound, and the other on the Beaufort side, both of which will excel in architec ture and appointments any seaside resort ever built on the .North Carolina coast. A very singular accident happened to the Charlotte, Columbia & Augusta passenger train as it came in yesterday afternoon at 4 o'clock. As the engine passed over the frog of the switch it jumped the track, and striking the side track ran along on the erossties of this for a distance equal twice its length, and then mounted the track. So when tbe train was stopped by application of the air brakes, tbe engine all the wheels of it was on the side track, the oars on the main track and the tender of the engine between the two tracks, in all tbe confu sion and changing around of things, no thing was broken and no one was hurt There have been seeond growths this year of many kinds of fruit, but it has re mained for a pear tree, on the premises of Mr. M. P. Pegram, of this city, to put itself beyond tbe reach of all competition. This tree is cow bearing its third crop of pears for this year. The pears of this third crop vary in size rrom anickory-nut to a walnut, but they are green and bard, and two months of sunshine and freedom from frost would hardly suffice to bring them to per fection. For all that they are pears, and not bad sized pears, either. THE CITY. NBff anvuBTisBiuKnrs. Ed. W. Tatlok Tax notice. Munson Latest styles collars. Caution Notice Crew "Arms." O. He received them from the captain of a foreign vessel lately in this port. m mm Ttae Harboring and Abduction Case. The cases of William Fisher and John Fisher, father and son, the former charged with harboring the outlaw, Tom Johnson, and tbe latter with assisting in tbe abduc tion of bis wife from the bouse of one Ida Macks, some time last year, came up for a hearing before Justice Gardner yester day afternoon. ' John Fisher's case was first taken up. The testimony against him was to tbe effect that he went to the house where Mary Ann Johnson was, in company with Tom John sou and Simon Haggett, the escaped mur derer, on the night in question; that they pointed their guns in at the dour, and finally Tom Johnson entered and seized his wife, remarking to Haggetl and Fisher, "Boys, keep your guns in action," and took her by force from the bouse. John Fisher was fully identified by Mary Ann Johnson as the man who was with Johnson and Rag gett when she was kidnapped. Justice Gardner required the defendant to give a justified bond in the sum of $100 for his appearance at Court, is default of which be was committed to jail. William Fisher was next arraigned on the charge of harboring tbe outlaw, but, when confronted with Johnson's wife, or widow, she declared that he was not the man, and he was therefore discharged. The case of Arthur Fisher, brother of William Fisher, who has been arrested on the charge of harboring Johnson, will be heard this afternoon. Solicitor Moore, of the Criminal Court, appeared for the prosecution, and John L. Holmes, Esq., for the defence. 'Oil on ibe Troubled We find the following in the scientific column of the New York Ledger, being condensed from an article in Chambers Journal, to which it was contributed by Alex. Sprunt, Esq., British Vice Consul at this port. Mr. Sprant's reason for sending the paper to Mr. Chambers was the fact that he had already broached the subject in his columns: "The British Vice Consul at Wilmington, N. C, has sent to Mr. William Chambers, of Edinburgh, the deposition of a sea cap tain, tending to confirm the view that oil may be advantageously employed to calm a stormy sea. and thus avert shipwrek. In April last the origan tine Gem, of Sackville, New Brunswick, Richardson, master, en countered a heavy gale about one degree east of Bermuda. It blew a hurricane from the northwest about thirty-fix boors, with a cross sea, so that the hatch was stove in, the boats received much injury, and tbe try-sail was blown away. As tbe sea rose higher the captain resolved to resort to the oil experiment. He had a canvass bag prepared holding a small quantity of kero sene oil, and trailed it in the sea to wind ward, with a rone six fathoms long. 'The oil leaking through the canvass,' says tbe deposition, 'greatly broke the topping sea, and made matters much more favorable for the ship. The mate, who bad himself lashed to tbe rigging during the Whole of his watch, believed; with the captain, that the resort to the oil saved the ship. ' Tbe most extraordinary part of this story is that only about three quarts of oil are said to have been used, and that this quantity could have produced any appreciable ef fect is marvellous indeed. According to Mr. Chambers, however, the waves are not lessened in size by the action of the oil, but are prevented from breaking. Personal and Religious. Rev. James B. Taylor, Pastor of tbe First Baptist Church, left for Richmond, Vs., on Wednesday night, where be was called to the bedside of a dying sister, Should he fail to. return in time arrange ments have been made by which his pulpit will be filled on Sunday, Rev. Mr. Yates, of the Front Street M. E. Church, preach ing in the forenoon, and Hev. Mr. Half, of the Fifth Street M , E. Church, in the evening- fammimi : narsti The only cases before the Mayor's Court yesterday morning were those of Charles Spencer and Romeo Harrison, two- young colored men, charged with acting very dis orderly in the neighborhood of Third and Market streets on Wednesday night. It being their finr ofrenee, and they having been locked up during the night, judgment was suspended and they were discharged. To-Day's Indications. For the South Atlantic States, colder northeast to west winds, rising barometer, and partly cloudy weather and light local rains near the coast. The Drowned nasi. We mentioned in onr last the fact of the drowning of an unknown colored man from Hutchings' flat, at the foot of Princess sweet, on the night of Tuesday last. It has since transpired that tbe man who had been seen on tbe flat was one John Ray, well known about the wharf. He bad been em ployed on a lighter during a part of theday, but left it and went on board of the flat, from whence it is supposed be fell over board and was drowned. He was last seen sitting on the corner of the cabin, and soon afterwards a splash was heard and some one on shore cried out, "Man overboard." Parties in the cabin of the flat rushed out, but saw no signs of tbe drowning man except the bubbles on the water. Ray lived on Eleventh, between Market and Dock streets, and his wife, who was down the street en quiring about him yesterday, says she has not seen him since Tuesday morning. He was about 40 years old, came here from Texas on the schooner Ajax, which arrived here with a number of "Mustangs" a year or so ago, and got married about two or three months since. Magistrate's Conn. Lucinda James, colored, had a hearing before Justice McQuigg, yesterday morn ing, upon the charge of committing assault upon one Lucy Jones, colored, both of Middle Sound. Cace dismissed on the payment of costs. The same defendant, arraigned on a peace warrant sworn out by the said Lucy Jones, was ordered to give bond in the sum of $100 to keep tbe peace for three months. The Board of Aldermen will have a meeting this evening to consider some special business that will come before them. K1VKK AND ITtAKINK. A fore-and-aft schooner, name un known, was reported in below yesterday. The .Norwegian brig Suxinus, Capt. Tallacksen, from Bermuda, is reported in below. She registers 247 tons, and, is con signed to Mr. R. E Heide. Through a dispatch received from Fayetteville yesterday morning, by Messrs.
